Accurate measurements of global precipitation are vital to the advancement of our understanding of the global hydrological cycle. The lack of rain‐gauge networks over the vast oceans points to satellite techniques as the only means by which oceanic rainfall can be measured and monitored. Passive microwave satellite measurements, obtained by the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites, augmented with sophisticated retrieval and statistical techniques, can now provide quantitative climate‐scale oceanic rainfall estimates.It has long been recognized that precipitation is a major component of the global hydrological cycle and of the energetics of atmospheric circulation. In the past several years, a number of people have inquired and expressed concern regarding the support for limnological research at the National Science Foundation. There is a perception among some members of the scientific community that the discipline of limnology, the study of inland waters, has not been well‐served at NSF. Communications from a variety of sources suggest that many limnologists perceive a problem with the status of the discipline and with the leadership being shown by the federal government in this area. It has long been thought that dust particles making up the zodiacal cloud come predominantly from sources within the solar system such as short‐period comets, asteroids, and Jupiter's moons. However, data received recently from the Ulysses spacecraft calls this assumption into question, indicating that most of the dust particles encountered beyond the asteroid belt are of interstellar origin [Grun et al., 1993]. The particles were found to be entering the solar system at high speed (v≥26 km/s) from the general direction of the galactic center, approximately the same ecliptic direction from which the interstellar gas wind originates.These results do not surprise me. In my 1983 Ph.D. dissertation and in subsequent papers I had stated reasons for believing that interstellar dust has recently entered the solar system in large quantities specifically from the direction of the galactic center. On February 21, the world lost a pioneering woman scientist and I lost a treasured friend.I met Inge Lehmann in the 1950s when she came to Lamont to work on her “Lg” paper. We immediately became friends despite the large difference in our ages. Her quiet dignity, her interest in everything scientific and feminine, her desire to learn all she could about our lives in and out of the observatory astounded me. Inge was shy, almost painfully so. Dr. Ewing arranged for Inge to stay in the guest house where she could do her work and have assistance as needed. One of my most pleasant duties to make her feel at home was to take her on weekly trips to the supermarket. She prepared her own meals in her guest house quarters. I shopped for my own family at the same time, leaving my provisions in the car until it was time to go home after work. Inge kept ice cream and frozen food in her small freezer for
