摘要:
Polls are expensive when one considers the time required to fill out the questionnaire and process and evaluate the answers (not to mention the postage and handling). However, there is no better way for the officers and Council of AGU to discover the sentiments of the membership on the important issues facing our society. We must avoid falsely perceiving the wishes of our membership through the voices of a few outspoken individuals. Our recent poll is remarkable in many ways. Some 40% of our membership responded, an unusually large fraction for a survey of this kind. Most pollsters claim that they can achieve statistically valid results with only a few percent response. The results are summarized in this issue of EOS.

摘要:
In late afternoon on March 10, 1975, Roy Ashe, operator of the Upper Baker Dam at the Baker Lake hydroelectric reservoir, reported than an unusually large dark gray plume of vapor was rising above the rim of the Sherman Crater near the top of Mount Baker, 21 km upstream. A flurry of aerial observations the following day noted distinct changes from previously known fumarolic activity in the ice‐covered crater. New fumaroles, ice pits, semicircular crevasses, and ponded water in the crater had appeared, as well as a thin dusting of gray debris 100 to 300 m outside the crater. The apparently sudden change in the thermal regime of Mount Baker was obvious as well as ominou

摘要:
The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon of striking beauty and overwhelming presence in certain parts of the world. It is therefore natural to ask what effect these northern lights have had on the native cultures in the auroral zones. Since the sun, moon, and stars all have a place in the mythology of most primitive cultures, it is not surprising that mention of the aurora is prevalent in the legends and folklore of the people who live within regular view of it.This paper does not attempt to delve into all the various historical sightings and accompanying explanations of the aurora but rather to relate some of the myths and legends built around the northern lights. There exist extensive listings of historical references to the aurora [Petrie, 1963], but it is not until one consults the folktales of the northern cultures that these sightings have any legendary importance. Auroral displays are connected to and explained by myths of great variety, and even today the northern lights appear in short stories and ballads such as the works ofService[1944].

摘要:
H. Guyford Stever, Director of the National Science Foundation, has announced a major reorganization of the agency that is designed ‘to provide an effective management structure for dealing with current and future operations. The reorganization has been under active consideration for more than a year and is aimed at strengthening NSF and addressing problems of increased activities,’ he said.An important change involves restructuring the Directorate for Research and the Directorate for National and International Programs along more functional lines. As a result, three new directorates (Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences; Astronomical, Earth, and Ocean Sciences; and Biological and Social Sciences) have been established. Each of the directorates will be headed by an assistant director nominated by the President and confirmed by the Sen

摘要:
The goal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in continuing to encourage and support research on all aspects of lunar science is to improve scientific understanding of the origin, evolution, structure, and composition of the moon and of its relationships to the earth and the solar system.NASA's broadly based lunar programs include (1) experimental and theoretical research on lunar materials (samples and Surveyor parts); (2) lunar data analysis and synthesis using published or other generally available data; and (3) supporting research and technology designed to aid in reaching the goals of the other lunar programs, such as theoretical studies, laboratory simulations, meteorite research, and advanced experimental concepts.

摘要:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has begun a geodetic survey along a 435‐mile segment of the Alaskan oil pipeline that will enable detection of the results of seismic activity. The estimated cost of the survey, conducted under a cooperative agreement with the consortium of petroleum firms building the pipeline, is about $170,00

摘要:
At the business meeting of the section on Solar‐Planetary Relationships held on June 19, 1975, as part of the annual AGU meeting in Washington, approval was given to the formation of a Committee on Professional History operating within the section. This step followed an awareness by many members of the section that at a time of unprecedented research and discovery little is being done to properly record and document this unique era of scientific expansion. The final distillation of scientific work is generally preserved in the professional literature, but the process by which these results are achieved—the development and evolution of ideas, the interaction of the scientific community and of the individuals composing it, the role of unexpected results and lucky guesses and so forth—all these tend to get lost and forgotten: as memories fade, people pass away and records are discarded, not much is left for the historian who tries to reconstruct the creative process and the atmosphere in which it flour
