摘要:
Investigators, studying data from NASA's second High Energy Astronomy Observatory, have confirmed the emission of X rays from Jupiter. The giant planet thus joins earth as the only planets known to produce X rays. The X ray emission was confirmed by a team led by Albert Metzger of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The group's findings were reported by Metzger last week at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society, at the University of Maryland, College Park.

摘要:
Five new sets of data on the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska are available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The information was collected by com panies under contract to the U.S. Geological Survey in order to evaluate the petroleum potential of parts of the Petroleum Reserve. The data sets contain new well log data for five wells; velocity surveys for nine wells; palynology and micropaleontologic data for 29 wells; about 2000 line miles of seismic data, both on and offshore; 1195 flight line miles of aerial gamma ray and magnetic information; and several location maps and interpretive reports.

摘要:
The ‘first ever’ oceanography section luncheon was held at Captain Johns Harbour Boat Restaurant, Toronto on May 24, 1980. Approximately 100 members were in attendance. Outgoing president Worth Nowlin reviewed some of the activities of the past year, including an increased emphasis on thematic sessions at annual meetings and an increase in AGU fellows elected from the oceanography section. More active involvement of the Section in the affairs of the Union through more (voluntary) service on AGU committees is needed to help the AGU better serve the needs of oceanographers. Those interested in serving should contact incoming president James J. O'Brien, president‐elect Chris Mooers, or secretary Charles Hollister. William Patzert will be oceanography chairman for the 1980 Fall Meeting in San Francisco; recommendations for special sessions should be sent to Bill
