The IHD (International Hydrological Decade), 1965 to 1974, was conceived as a concerted international effort to bring into focus the badly fragmented subdiscipline of hydrology, to evolve a global perspective on water, and to provide global information on water.Until the last decade or so, hydrology was a laggard science. The science was also fragmented among surface‐water hydrology, agricultural hydrology, groundwater hydrology, oceanology, hydrometeorology, and hydrogeochemistry. All these disciplines were bona fide members of the hydrological family, but there was little interchange, so there was no central focus for the science as a whol

Developing countries will play an increasing role in determining the future of atmospheric carbon dioxide, but the Soviet Union, the United States, and the People's Republic of China are mainly responsible for C02increases. That's the latest word on atmospheric carbon dioxide as presented at one of three Union sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, earlier this month.The session summarized a 1‐year Department of Energy study, conducted by the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that investigated a variety of possible global effects. Although some of the conclusions are similar to those reached several years ago, namely, that by the year 2050, C02levels will approach 600 parts per million, or double that of the late 1980s, this Union session was the most comprehensive and detailed presentation of the problem, according to William W. Kellogg of the Aspen Institute and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
