In the July issue of EOS, Hildebrandt, Haas, Jenkins, and Colaco have presented an interesting technical exercise by developing the design for a solar‐powered electrical generating system using steerable Fresnel mirrors and a fixed boiler [‘Large Scale Concentration and Conversion of Solar Energy,’ p. 684]. They suggest that such an arrangement could be capable of supplying the bulk of United States energy needs in the year 2000, but their economic analysis has not considered several important aspects of the overall logistics. Magnetospheric physicists from sixteen states and three foreign countries met in Houston, Texas, October 20–21, 1972, for a Conference on Magnetospheric Substorms. The conference, sponsored jointly by AGU and Rice University, was held on the Rice campus and was attended by 129 scientists, including 28 students.The aims of the conference were to assess the present state of knowledge of the substorm phenomenon and to promote informal discussion of present controversies relating to substorm observations and theory. The second aim was easily met; the magnetosphere was discussed in varying degrees of informality, from the preregistration beer party Thursday night through the final session Saturday afternoon. The first aim proved to be more difficult. In trying to unravel the devious mechanism whereby the sun turns on the auroras, it seems that the problem of identifying the right questions to ask is sometimes as difficult as finding the answer

A report on fluid inclusions, which are microscopic fluid ‘bubbles’ trapped inside mineral crystals for as much as a billion years, has been published. Geologists have found that these bubbles are useful clues in the search for ore deposits.According to the author, Edwin Roedder, the U.S. Geological Survey report is the most comprehensive summary of the subject in the English language. Roedder explained that fluid inclusions might be considered as miniature Rosetta Stones or Dead Sea Scrolls of geology. ‘They are clues to geologic events of the fat past,’ he said, ‘when ore deposits were forming in baths of salty water. After 12 years of modest efforts, Princeton University has taken several major steps to revise and strengthen its educational and research programs in Water Resources. Last October the president of the University, Robert Goheen, appointed a new faculty committee from three departments with broad interests to reorganize and investigate Princeton's resources and commitment in this area. The committee, drawn from the departments of Civil and Geological Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Sciences, and Chemical Engineering, is headed by W.E. Bonini.

A new M.S. option in applied meteorology is now being offered at Florida State University. The thesis type M.S. program, which will allow considerable outside course work, is designed for B.S. graduates in meteorology who are interested in applying their meteorological knowledge in other fields of study. The program is intended to be quite flexible and could involve the use of meteorology or climatology in such diverse areas as city planning, biological succession, economics, or transportation. Programs in such areas as marine meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, statistical meteorology, or hydrometeorology could also be arranged under this option.

摘要:
A compact, all solid state riometer has been developed at the University of California, San Diego, in connection with a research program to study ionospheric absorption at high latitudes. The unit is particularly suitable for unmanned ground stations where reliability must be high and power consumption low.In the new units the thermionic diodes, which have been used traditionally as a reference noise source, have been replaced by low power planar silicon transistors. These have a good linear response and do not require any special power supplies. A regular sequence of calibrations has been arranged using logic circuitry so that the stability of the riometer can be monitored easily. A crystal clock is an integral part of the unit to maintain accurate timing. The system time constant has been set as low as 0.2 sec in order that rapidly changing details of absorption events can be studied with the instrument.
