摘要:
Most members of AGU are not familiar with the inner workings of the organization. Every two years about a third of the membership send in ballots for officers of the union and the sections and trust that their choices will attend faithfully to union affairs—and, hopefully, refrain from raising dues. Some more active individuals vent their opinions on actions by editors of the journals and their misgivings about our mass meetings. In the process, union and section presidents get some exposure. Also, to the advantage of all concerned, they change every two year

摘要:
Penrose, Day, and Horton are names familiar to many earth scientists. Although they contributed actively to the earth sciences during their lifetimes, they are today perhaps better known for the work done in their names and through funds set aside by them. Penrose Place in Boulder, Colorado, is the site of the beautiful building housing the Geological Society of America; administered by the National Academy of Sciences the Arthur L. Day Fund provides for grants to individuals who are working for the advancement of study of the physics of the earth; the Horton Fund of AGU's section of Hydrology was first used to provide capital for starting Water Resources Research and is now used principally for small grants in support of research.Nonprofit organizations rely on gifts and bequests for acquiring capital to free them from a hand‐tomouth existence and to permit the establishment of innovative programs. Some programs, such as scholarships and research grants, require continuing funds; other programs, such as buildings, require substantial initial support, since they will not begin to pay back their costs for many years. A nonprofit scientific society may never build the financial reserves for such undertaking

摘要:
By the turn of the century, nuclear power may generate more than one‐half of the electric energy, and about one‐third of the total energy consumed in the United States [Thompson, 1971;Chapman et al., 1972]. By 2020, the total quantity of high‐level radioactive wastes (HLW) generated as a byproduct of nuclear fuel reprocessing for such power generation may total about 900,000 m3as liquid or 70,000 m3as solid [Gera and Jacobs, 1972]; the radioactivity of long‐lived nuclides in the HLW will total about 8.7×1010Ci [Gera and Jacobs, 1972]. (High‐level wastes are defined as wastes containing at least 1 Ci of radioactivity per liter of liquid, or 70 Ci/kg of solid [American Institute of Chemical Engineering, ANSI Standard N5.8‐1967]. Wastes from chemical processing of irradiated nuclear fuels typically contain several hundred to several thousand curies per gallon

摘要:
The idea of using volcano energy raises an altogether different set of difficulties from those involved in present‐day exploitation of other forms ofgeothermal energy in several parts of the world. To be utilizable by contemporary technology, the latter forms of energy must exist in an unusually favorable geological configuration, with an aquifer capped by an impermeable layer and heated from below. Such geological configurations are not common, as is attested by the relatively small number of productive thermal fields in the world. On the other hand, there are numerous active volcanoes, scores of them in Japan alone, that release tremendous amounts of heat. It has been a constant challenge to volcanologists to somehow harness that dissipated hea

摘要:
On the invitation of the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas, through the Institute de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), the Seventeenth COSPAR Meeting and related activities and the International Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics took place in the Anhembi Palace, Sao Paulo, Brazil, from June 17 to July 1, 1974.The total number of scientific papers presented during the open meetings of COSPAR working groups and the specialized activities was approximately 230.

摘要:
At the Twenty‐Fourth International Geological Congress (August 1972) a group of geologists and geophysicists interested in the application of the geomagnetic polarity time scale to stratigraphic correlation met to discuss the requirements of the problems involved in setting up a nomenclature system that does not conflict with present stratigraphic terminology and usage. Two meetings were held. As an outcome, a formal membership was set up and was subsequently recognized as a subcommission (on the magnetic polarity time scale) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS

摘要:
A new service known as Oasis (Oceanic and Atmospheric Scientific Information System) has been announced by the Technical Information Division (TID) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The service offers computer searches of citations to published literature and references to research in progress or recently completed in the fields of atmospheric, marine, and earth sciences and of marine resources. Data bases that can be searched by making a request to the TID include both NOAA and non‐NOAA bibliographic files. Current awareness (periodic search for new information) as well as one‐time retrospective searches (everything available to date) are offe

Virtually cloud‐free space images of all parts of the 48 conterminous United States have been taken by NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite (Erts 1) and are now available for public sale.Erts 1 was launched on July 23, 1972, and although it was designed to last only one year, it is still sending back picture images. Erts 2 is scheduled for launching in 197

摘要:
The International Association of the Hydrological Sciences, with the support of Unesco and the World Meteorological Organization, will convene a symposium and workshops on the Application of Mathematical Models in Hydrology and Water Resources Systems in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, from September 8 to 13, 1975. The meeting is being organized by the Czechoslovak National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme in cooperation with the IAHS.Attention will be focused on the practical application of deterministic, stochastic, and system models in hydrology; the gap between theory and practice in the modeling of catchment behavior and of water resources systems; and exploration of the relationship between catchment models and water resource system models.
