摘要:
The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) has published a set of three new shaded and color relief maps of the world. These maps were generated from digital elevation and bathymetric data by using computer‐based imaging and graphics technology. The maps, a logical byproduct of the advent of worldwide coverage of digital gridded data bases, represent an extensive cooperative effort between government agencies and academia. Their preparation involved efforts by several persons and institutions under the joint sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research and NGD

摘要:
A congressional task force that was established in 1984 to examine the goals of federal science policy has announced a schedule of hearings (see Table 1, below) on the remaining topics on its agenda. After these hearings are completed, the Task Force on Science Policy will circulate a draft of its final report, according to Rep. Don Fuqua (D‐Fla.), chairman of the task force and of the House Committee on Science and Technology.During additional hearings to be conducted during the summer, “We plan to seek comments on this draft from leaders in American science policy, past and present,” Fuqua said. When that process ends, the task force plans to propose its final conclusions and recommendations on the future direction of the federal government's role in setting science policy and in supporting research. The study is the first such comprehensive review by the House in more than 20

摘要:
On October 17–18, 1985, a 2‐day workshop on hydromagnetic waves in the earth's magnetospheric plasma was held at Columbia University, New York, N.Y. The workshop was sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and by Columbia University. Some 40 scientists attended. They discussed the following topics:generation of hydromagnetic waves in the frequency range of geomagnetic pulsations,Alfven resonances in the earth's magnetosphere, effects of the ionosphere on geomagnetic pulsations, andspacecraft and ground observations of geomagnetic pulsations in high latitudes (considerable attention was devoted to day cusps pulsatio

摘要:
On February 28, 1986, theJournal of Geophysical Research(JGR) Editorial Search Committee decided to select a board of six or seven editors to replace retiring JGR‐Solid Earth and Planets editor Gerald Schubert. The committee, made up of the presidents‐elect of the solid earth sections, a representative of the Publications Committee, and the retiring editor, determined that this organization would be most effective for this section of JGR.The Solid Earth and Planets section of JGR has grown dramatically during the tenure of the current editor. The Union sees further opportunities for growth in the coming years as newly developing areas begin to bear fruit. Attracting the best papers to AGU journals is viewed as an essential part of the mandate for serving the information needs of all memb
