摘要:
During the past few years more and more museums endeavoring to establish displays of representative articles involved in disciplines not previously a part of the museum are finding that many institutions and corporations have already disposed of their obsolete material. This is particularly true in many phases of geophysics. Accordingly, AGU has decided to do something about the situation.A basic premise has been the establishing of a geophysical hall, hopefully at the Smithsonian Institution, and in the not too distant future. In keeping with current trends, the various displays will contain not merely a large amount of rejuvenated junk, but will attempt to convey the story of the development of theory, equipment, and technology. Instruments and displays will be carefully selected and designed to produce an even flow of information.

摘要:
One of the unfortunate victims of nineteenth century nationalism was the common language for scientific publication. Up to that time Latin had continued as alingua francaamong scientists. But the competition of local academies, sponsored by princes jealous of each other, led eventually to the use of the vernacular for scientific communication.Yet in the interval up to World War I it developed that most scientific work was concentrated in a few major nations and publications were over 90 per cent in English, French, and German. The universal language of diplomacy was French and it was adopted by some of the important scientific bodies in countries with other, particularly, Slavic tongues as the medium for their scientific communications. Most notable among these was the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences in what was then St. Petersburg.

摘要:
At a time when government and society are reassessing national priorities, and support for basic research is uncertain, a clear definition of the role of basic research in universities is of vital concern. It is therefore appropriate that we examine university goals and the contribution of basic research toward attaining those goals. Arguments are put forth below to the effect that education is the only proper endeavor for a university, and the prime role for research in a university is as the principal tool for graduate education. It is the education of men and women, who through research learn to think creatively and imaginatively, that justifies a significant university involvement in basic research.

Ten years ago we completed the International Geophysical Year. It was a magnificent effort of worldwide geophysical observations, marked by the emergence of the first satellites. The IGY was also a landmark in organization. Under the leadership of Sydney Chapman, Lloyd Berkner, Joseph Kaplan and Marcel Nicolet, the IGY became a model in international cooperation for other programs that followed.
