摘要:
Frank Snodgrass died this morning on his farm in Oregon. He had been my partner for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1976.So many oceanographic techniques that are taken for granted today were introduced by Frank. He pioneered digital recording. He was the first (in 1965) to drop gear in freefall to the sea floor for subsequent acoustic recall. I believe that he was the first to use a portable sea‐going laboratory. We still use the frame of Frank's first model, which dates back over 20 year

摘要:
After some decades of comparative neglect, changes in mean sea level relative to land (RSL) are now appreciated by oceanographers and geophysicists as an important integral parameter of ocean climate and vertical land movement that is fairly easy to measure for long periods. Interest has been raised by the relevance of RSL to “El Niño” events, as shown by the new Pacific island network operated by the University of Hawaii, and by several studies of recent secular rise in global RSL in relation to changes in temperature and glaciation. Monthly RSL maps for the entire tropical Pacific are currently issued in near real time by the Integrated Global Ocean Station System Sea Level Pilot Project. A global network of tide gage stations has recently been proposed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization in support of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) and World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) campa

摘要:
Recent deep‐sea dredging conducted from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) research vessel 5.P. Leerecovered samples of massive sulfide deposits from the southern Gorda Ridge axis off northern California. The deposits were recovered from the flank of an uplifted dome in the center of the sediment‐filled Escanaba Trough near 40°45′N. These samples represent the first massive sulfide deposit discovered within the U.S. Exclusive Economi

摘要:
Streamflows were normal to well above normal at 93% of the key index gaging stations across the country during September, according to the end of the month check on water resources conditions by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS hydrologists said that of the 174 key index gaging stations reporting for September, 35% (61 stations) had well above normal flows, 58% (101) stations had normal flows, and only 7% (12 stations) had well below normal flows.
