摘要:
Pedro Nuñez (the name is also written variously as Nunes, Nonius, Nonnius, and Nunnius) was born at Alcacer do Sol, Portugal, in 1502, and died in 1578. In that period and in that country, it was inevitable that his interests were in cosmography and navigation. His principal claim to fame is as author of the major treatiseDe Arte Atque Ratione Navigandi, which was published in 1546

摘要:
Until now, archaeological evidence that human beings lived in the eastern Sahara Desert several hundred thousand years ago seemed to be distributed randomly. It now seems, however, that these artifacts may be concentrated along the shorelines of ancient streams that were detected only recently with the help of radar instruments carried aboard the space shuttle in 1981 and 1984.

摘要:
A series of four earthquakes shook an area centered 24 km north of Bishop, Calif., on July 20–21, 1986. The earthquake swarm prompted the director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to send a letter to the California Office of Emergency Services, advising state officials of increased risk that additional earthquakes of the same or greater magnitude could soon follow. The earthquakes near Bishop had no apparent connection to two quakes in other parts of the state earlier in the month. AsEoswent to press, the seismic activity near Bishop was tapering off, “as it does in a normal aftershock sequence,” according to David P. Hill, a geophysicist with USGS in Menlo Park,
