摘要:
There was an era long ago when scientists worked with test tubes, sealing wax, and string. Then if they chose, they could conduct their work largely unaffected by the public mood. But those days are gone, and research at the frontiers of science is complex and costly. Much of the support for research comes from the federal government, and its level and emphasis tend to be sensitive to public opinion. Moreover, higher education is also vulnerable to the winds of changing fashions. Accordingly, scientists and engineers have a considerable stake in consequences of the energy shortage. The profound influence of events on the conduct of research was evident in our experiences of the last two decades.

摘要:
Geophysicists for a long time have employed acoustics to research problems throughout the solid earth, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere, using in these mediums signals from both natural sources and man‐made sources. Although each of the propagating mediums has its unique problems, there is much similarity in the methods used to measure, record, display, and analyze the acoustic signals. In this article the author describes an application of acoustic techniques to the study of thunderstorms by utilizing thunder as the acoustic signal. My coworkers and I feel that a recounting of these methods with the inherent difficulties and the successes will reach a broad, sympathetic readership in EO

摘要:
The study of planetary dynamics and geodesy is a difficult subject. This is so, not simply because of the complexity of the interactions between several scientific disciplines, including geophysics, geology, geochemistry, seismology, celestial mechanics, radar astronomy, and meteoritics, but perhaps more fundamentally, because of a lack of data.Although it is true that the space age has brought about important new observational techniques, which are responsible in large part for the rapid developments in planetary science over the past decade, and although we should expect to see significant progress in the field over the next few years, it is still a sad fact that data will be severely limited for an indefinite period of time in the future. The basic problem is that we can observe and study, at present, only one planetary system in the universe. This system, our solar system, contains only four major planets, five terrestrial planets, where we are inclined to include the moon but exclude Pluto, and a fairly hmited collection of debris, presumably left over from some inadequately understood formation process. Thus it is impossible to base the study of planets on a significant statistical sample.

摘要:
A symposium on Possilbe Relationships Between Solar Activity and Meteorological Phenomena was held at the Goddard Space Flight Center, November 7–8, 1973. It was sponsored by NASA in cooperation with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and the American Meteorological Society. The 200 scientists who attended the symposium included meteorologists, aeronomers, solar and plasma physicists, and astrophysicists, attesting to the truly interdisciphnary nature of this are

摘要:
Discovery of two new organic molecules in the atmosphere of Jupiter has been announced by a Kitt Peak National Observatory astronomer. Observations of the planet made in the 10‐μ wavelength range of the infrared spectrum have revealed the presence in Jupiter's upper atmosphere, above a temperature inversion, of ethane and acetylene. They are the first new gases to be detected in the Jovian atmosphere since the discovery of molecular hydrogen in 1950. The other two known constituents, methane and ammonia, were identified in the 1930

摘要:
According to a release by the Agency Press Novosti, a permanent glaciological observation and research. station has been set up on the Central Tyuksu glacier in the Zaili Alataus mountains of southern Kazakhstan, USSR.In cooperation with the program of the International Hydrological Decade, researchers of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences who staff the station are making a study of the development of glaciers in the Tien Shan, the lofty mountain range that extends from the Kirgiz Republic, USSR, into Sinkiang province in western China. The scientists observe the conditions of snow accumulation and the physical balance of the glaciers, study the thickness of the ice formed, and determine what chemical substances accompany atmospheric precipitation.

摘要:
TheTerex‐Cobey Composter, developed jointly by the Terex Division of General Motors Corporation and its inventor, Herbert T. Cobey, operates to accelerate a natural process by which organic wastes such as garbage, refuse, sewage sludge, and animal manures are converted into a dry, odor‐free, stable fuel resembling lignite. The conversion is accomplished at temperatures up to 170° Fahrenheit generated by aerobic thermophilic bacterial ac
