With all due respect to Dr. Morse of Massachusetts, I must submit an opinion quite opposite to the one he expressed in the March 1974 EOS Forum page. I find the advance publishing of abstracts one of the most valuable aspects of EOS. GAP (Geophysical Abstracts in Press) emphasizes the value of a well‐written abstract, which should convey the most important results. Second, it expedites publication of those essential details. Finally, few of us can afford personal subscriptions to all the journals of AGU, and the abstracts tell us which issues in a library are worth tracking dow

On the occasion of the 1974 honors banquet of the AGU, I was seated next to Maurice Ewing, who was the recipient that evening of the Bucher medal. (He had received the Bowie award in 1957.) The whole affair was especially pleasant. The other recipients of awards, A.E. Ringwood, Bowie medalist; and Amos Nur, Mcelwane award, have made distinguished contributions, and they are well‐rounded scientists who honor the union. But Maurice Ewing has an especial claim to the warm regard of his colleagues. He has been a member of the union since 1931, and has presented scores of papers at union sessions and served the union in many ways, including the presidency from 1956 to 1959. His pioneering efforts in oceanography captured for him and for this country a preeminent role in the field. I will not attempt to catalog his achievements. Geomagnetic field observations at the earth's surface are of interest to a variety of geophysicists and characteristically contain effects due to currents in the regions above the surface. A symposium on this subject was held during the April 16–20, 1973 meeting of the AGU and was cosponsored by the sections of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism and Solar‐Planetary Relationships‐Magnetospheric Physics. The program contained invited and contributed papers on the basic physics involved, the configuration of the sources, and the local time variations. Wasserburg, professor of geologyand geophysics at the California Institute of Technology, and the late PaulWerner Gast, who was professor of geology at Columbia and chief of theDivision of Planetary and Earth Sciences in NASA's Johnson Space Center inHouston. Professor Wasserburg*s response at the presentation constitutes anappropriate tribute to the memory of Paul Gast, who at the time of his deathwas president of AGU's Section of Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology.(Ed.)

An error has been discovered in the reported recovery figures for leg 24 in the abstract 'Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks Recovered by the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Legs 1‐31' by W.B. Friesen (EOS,54, 972‐985, 1973).A revision of Figure 7 showing the correct recoveries is reproduced below. The leg 24 recovery and the cumulative recovery in Table 1 and the leg 24 recovery in the histogram (Figure 1) should be adjusted to show 74.0 m. Figure 1 contains two photographs obtained from a military satellite that is part of the U.S. Air Force's Defense Systems Application Program (DSAP). The U.S. Air Force Air Weather Service Data Acquisition and Processing Program (Dapp) now routinely provides similar satellite photographs to the Environmental Data Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at their National Geophysical and Solar Terrestrial Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, for copying and for general distribution. The data center then sends the original photographs to the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories for archiving.
