Palsas and associated permafrost mounds (also called cemetery mounds or cryogenic mounds) are common geomorphological features in northern Canada. Indeed, over 50% of the Canadian landmass and parts of the near offshore are underlain by permafrost. The cover photograph shows a typical palsa field, photographed from the air at Umiujaq on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, Quebec, Canada (longitude 76°W, latitude 57°N). The Third International Symposium on the North American Vertical Datum (NAVD Symposium '85 ), hosted by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), was held at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rockville, Md., April 21–26, 1985.
