摘要:
The procedures and policies for AGU travel grants to attend IUGG‐associated symposia is presented, including information on the nomination of the reviewing committee, the selection criteria, and examples of a few of the headaches and problems encountered in the selection process. A suggested “application etiquette” is also

摘要:
In 1985, the Geochemical and Environmental Research Group (GERG) at Texas A&M University (College Station, Tex.) reported inEos[Brooks et al, 1985] the discovery of chemosynthetic organisms (bivalves and tube worms) at two sites on the Gulf of Mexico continental slope. The presence of gas hydrates at five sites, some associated with oil‐stained sediments, was also detailed. In the subsequent year, follow‐up cruises and submersible dives (using the Johnson Sea‐Link, owned and operated by the Harbor Branch Foundation, Fort Pierce, Fla., and the Navy NR‐1) investigated the physiology, biochemistry, and distribution of these chemosynthetic or

摘要:
Most people are genuinely sympathetic to the difficulties encountered by handicapped persons, but probably too often the compassion evaporates when the wheelchair disappears from view or the tapping of crutches fades down the hall. The accessibility of buildings and facilities has certainly improved in recent years; we now take it for granted that curb cuts and wide doors make the going smoother, at least in public places like university campuses, but consciences still are not eased simply by holding the elevator.

摘要:
In an effort to make physics publications more widely available, the Executive Committee of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) has agreed to makeGeneral Physics Advanced Abstractsavailable free of charge to physicists in developing countries. The Executive Committee of the American Physical Society has decided to makePhysical Review Abstractsavailable as well.General Physics Advanced Abstractsprovides prepublication abstracts for articles that appear in some 40 AIP and member society journals.Physical Review Abstractscontains abstracts of material that will appear inPhysical Review, Physical Review Letters, andReview of Modern Physics.

摘要:
Kenneth E. Peters (University of South Carolina, Columbia) and Robert B. Herrmann (St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo.) have compiled a fascinating portfolio of reports of the great Charleston earthquake of 1886. Hermann discovered a number of these heretofore unknown materials in a box at St. Louis University. They were probably brought there from Washington, D.C. by the Reverend James B. Macelwane, who founded the first university geophysics department in the United States at St. Louis University in 1925. (AGU members may be interested to note that Macelwane published reports frequently in Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity, the predecessor of the Journal of Geophysical Research.) Peters worked with Hermann on compiling the materials, discovering other pertinent photographs, and writing historical sketches of the major persons involved.

摘要:
The first in a series of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) multidisciplinary colloquiums emphasizing interactions of global processes of the earth system was held at JPL (Pasadena, Calif.) on January 15, 1987. This JPL Colloquium on Global Interactions, titled “Carbon Dioxide and Other Trace Gases,” focused upon the role of the ocean and biosphere in global greenhouse warming and upon opportunities for space research missions. As illustrated in Figure 1, the spatial and time scales of this phenomenon encom‐passes the globe and is of the order of 100 years. Greenhouse warming is the culmination of many phenomena interacting on different time and space s

摘要:
You can extend your commitment to the continuing vitality of geophysics by helping AGU to build funds that will provide for new initiatives and assist in funding some of the nonrevenue programs of AGU, such as the congressional science fellowship, minority student scholarships, and student travel grants. The AGU Development Committee is seeking gifts and contributions toward building the endowment of the Union: The vitality of AGU and the vitality of geophysics march hand in hand.
