摘要:
The deadline date for the National Science Foundation's Visiting Professorships for Women (VPW) program is November 15. The program enables experienced women scientists and engineers to undertake advanced research and teaching at host institutions where they can also provide guidance and encouragement to other women who want to pursue research careers. NSF is particularly interested in increasing participation in research of minority women and women with disabilities.

摘要:
The Greenland Sea is one of the few major areas where convective renewal of intermediate and deep waters contributes to world ocean ventilation. Basin‐scale cyclonic circulation, boundary currents advecting waters of Atlantic and Polar origin, mixing across the fronts related to the boundary currents, wintertime heat loss to the atmosphere, ice formation and related brine release and sequences of penetrative plumes control the renewal. The scales involved range from gyrescale to small‐scale and from interannual to hours. This wide range of environmental conditions provides an extreme ecosystem for which biota have evolved specific surviving strategies. In a joint effort, research groups from 11 nations are investigating both the processes and the rates of water‐mass transformation and transport and are working on the food chain dynamics and the life cycles of dominant species up to the zooplankton level in a several‐year program—the Greenland Sea Proj

摘要:
The President's 1991 National Science Foundation and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Budgets to Congress request funds to augment the Tropical Ocean/Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Research Program. This includes about $5 million in Fiscal Year 1991, with similar amounts planned in 1992 and 1993. Should Congress appropriate these funds, the augmentation will focus on the Western Pacific, a region identified as critically important to understanding interannual climate variability, particularly El Niño‐Southern Oscillati

摘要:
Standard and Reference Materials for Marine Science, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Technical Memo OMA‐51(2nd edition, 434 pp.), by A. Y. Cantillo, is now available. This compilation of reference materials was prepared at the request of the Group of Experts on Standards and Reference Materials and was printed by NOAA. GESREM is sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and the United Nations Program.Reference materials are included on ashes, gases, instrument performance materials, oils, physical properties, rocks, sediments, sludges, tissues and waters. For each reference material, source, description and preparation, analyses and values, cost, references, and comments are given. Indices are included for elements, isotopes and organic compounds. Cross references to Chemical Abstracts Service registry numbers and alternate names and chemical structures of organic compounds are also provide
