摘要:
The Yellowstone Plateau of northwestern Wyoming (Figure 1) is the site of one of the world's greatest displays of hydrothermal activity (geysers, hot springs, and fumeroles). In the past 2 million years, three catastrophic volcanic eruptions have expelled more than 3500 km3of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs forming three gigantic calderas. Intensive earthquake activity, including the Intermountain region's largest historic earthquake, the 1959, ML7.5, Hebgen Lake, Montana, event and extensive earthquake swarms in and around the Yellowstone caldera characterize the seismicity. Heat flow of ∼1500 mWm−2, in excess of 30 times the continental average, and historical crustal deformation of up to 1 m of uplift reflect the contemporary dynamics of this active volcano‐tectonic r

摘要:
The Geological Society of America is soliciting nominations for its new Young Scientist Award, the gold Donath Medal. An endow merit established by Fred A. Donath and his wife makes possible the medal and a cash prize, $10,000 this year, to a scientist who is 35 or younger. In addition, the winner will be given a complimentary life membership in GSA and complimentary lifetime affiliation in the GSA divisions of the medalist's choice. The first award will be given at the 1989 GSA annual meeting in November in St. Louis. The award will be made on the basis of outstanding achievement in contributing to geologic knowledge through original research that marks a major advance in the Earth sciences.

摘要:
Migration is one of those subjects that is difficult to explain to nonbelievers. The goal of migration is to generate an image of the subsurface velocity structure, but in order to migrate, one must firstassumea velocity structure. Furthermore, until recently, nobody knew the meaning of the numbers output from migration; they were just numbers that made an image that looked more or less like the input data. The situation is further confused by the many different methods of migration: finite difference, Kirchhoff,F‐K, phase shift, reverse time, dip move out (DMO), and others. It is possible to be an expert at one method of migration and understand almost nothing about the other methods. Migration is thus a kind of first aid: what to do while you wait for the mathematicians to arrive. Even the history of the subject is confused, mostly by the tendency of some petroleum companies to permit publication of research in only two instances: (a) when the are sure it will never work on data or (b) when they think the competition either already knows about it or is about to find ou
