摘要:
Sweden's first satellite, Viking, was successfully launched on February 22, 1986, at 01:44 UT. It was carried into orbit with the French remote sensing satellite SPOT by an Ariane 1 booster, launched from French Guiana. Viking's perigee boost motor placed this relatively small satellite (∼520 kg) into a final 817 km×13,527 km polar orbit, where it is conducting scientific observations of complex plasma processes in the magnetosphere and ionosphere of the earth. The satellite carries experiments to measure electric fields, magnetic fields, charged particles, waves, and auroral imag

摘要:
One showpiece of the space program has been the explosive growth in the subject of “planetary magnetism” [Russell, 1979, 1980]. Beginning with the December 1962 flyby of Venus by Mariner 2 and continuing through the January 1986 flyby of Uranus by Voyager 2, there have been over 15 spacecraft encounters of Mercury, Venus, the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, not to mention the planetary satellites. Venus, Mars, and the moon have each been orbited several times. In a sense, and somewhat ironically, the earth has received less magnetic scrutiny than our nearest neighbors in sp

摘要:
This is the first issue of The GP Compass, a quarterly newsletter for the Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism (GP) Section, as promised in my statement prior to my election as President. As I have stated, the newsletter should provide a focus for our members and bring a greater visibility to the activities of our section for the benefit of AGU members as a whole. Compared to some other section members, GP members tend to do their research individually rather than as large groups. Therefore a newsletter such as this ought to help inform us about the progress being achieved in the different areas within geomagnetism.

摘要:
Most of us think of the settings of scientific meetings in terms of darkened rooms with slide projectors, or arrays of bulletin boards and video screens with poster papers. One of the most visible sessions at the 1986 AGU Fall Meeting/ASLO Winter Meeting, however, will be a demonstration of the Global Positioning System (GPS) on the lawn and sidewalk area just across from the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Calif.Although the demonstration will begin in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday, December 9 (rain date: Wednesday, December 10), the instruments—at least three different pairs of GPS instruments from different manufacturers—will remain set up for examination during the morning sessions that day. The observations will be reduced with microcomputer software packages in an informal session on Wednesday afternoon, and the results of the measurements and reductions will be presented as part of a poster session on the morning of Thursday, December

摘要:
Fifteen years ago, when I first became involved in space physics research and started to attend conferences, the refereeing of proceedings papers was rarely regarded as a serious business. The relaxed attitudes then prevailing doubtless allowed fringe material to be published which might better not have been inflicted upon the community, but a few pages of such a nature at least provided some light relief in an otherwise solid diet of scientific progress. On the positive side, the freedom given to authors to express their views in a more unbuttoned manner than would be appropriate in a formal journal paper encouraged interesting, individual, and thought‐provoking contributions. The writing of conference papers could be a pleasurable and hassle‐free experie
