SUMMARYTwo hundred and sixty London children in their first term at infant school were rated by their teachers on a scale covering a wide range of behaviour. Thirteen per cent of the sample were having general difficulty coping with school, and around 25% had difficulties with language, persistence with activities, and fine motor control. Boys had significantly more difficulties than girls, and children starting in January‐had significantly more difficulties than those starting in September. A substantial minority of the children was still having difficulties eighteen months later. Several of these findings are replicated on data collected independently in Sloug

SummaryDeviant and non‐deviant boys were observed playing alone and interacting with a sibling. Compared with the normals, deviant children showed more changes in attention while playing alone and les co‐operative play while interacting with their brothers. For both deviant and non‐deviant Boys, activity and changes in attention were positively correlated with similar sibling responses. However, positive correlations for other behaviors, such as solitary play and non‐play activity were found only for non‐deviant sibling pairs. Relative to the normals, the behavior of deviant boys during solitary play was correlated with their behavior during sibling interaction, Suggesting greater cross‐situational consistency in responding. For both groups, self‐verbalizations during solitary play were related to behavior during social interactions

SUMMARYThe cognitive styles of reflection‐impulsivity, field‐dependence‐independence, and constricted‐flexible control were studied in 70 hyperactive adults and 42 matched controls as part of a follow‐up study. SUMMARYIn a total population survey of three‐year‐old children, mothers of 702 children were asked about the use by their children of a special soft object in situations of distress and at bedtime. 16·4% of children were currently using such an object. No relationship was found between object usage and sex, social class or sleeping arrangements. Object usage was related to the child's level of independence, tendency to suck fingers and other objects, and ease of going to sleep. SUMMARYA technique is described for radio‐recording adult‐child conversations at home and at nursery school, with an observer present to record the context. It was found that the amount of adult‐child talk at school varied systematically over the four days, with the least amount of talk on the first day. SUMMARYThis paper examined studies which bear on the peer relations of hyperactive children. Studies were reviewed and some new data reported under five headings: adult reports, self reports, and peer reports of problems with social interaction, direct observational studies, and studies of social cognition. Few studies actually address issues of peer relations in hyperactive children, although available evidence suggests that this is an area of deficit which should be considered more carefully from both a research and a treatment perspective.

SUMMARYThe case for sex differences in children's responses to family stress is considered and findings are reported from a study of 2775 first‐born children aged seven. Information regarding the children's adjustment was obtained from parents, teachers and school physicians. The marital status of parents was assessed by health visitors. The report concludes that marital disharmony may be associated with antisocial and emotional disorders in children of both sexes. SUMMARYAn 11‐yr‐old girl with a five year history of severe phobia of dogs was treated with flooding after desensitization failed. The procedure used is described and theoretical implications are briefly discussed. Nineteen months after flooding the girl is free of the phobia and symptoms of a tension state.
