Abstract—Day length and light intensity influence the respiratory activity ofPerila nankinensis(short‐day plant). Oxygen consumption in the leaves and in the apical bud is always greater in 8‐hr days than in 16‐hr days. It decreases during the course of development in short days (from germination to flowering) and in long days (vegetative growth). It increases after a transfer from non‐inductive day length to inductive (leading to flowering) and decreases after the inverse transfer.In both short days and long days, respiration rate in the leaves and the apical bud depend on light intensity. Abstract—Phytochrome‐induced photomorphogenesis in the mustard seedling (Sinapis albaL.) which can be regarded as being representative of the dicotyledonous seedlings has been analysed. In the present paper a number of arguments are presented, including data on RNA and protein synthesis and on the effects of actinomycin D and puromycin, which support the hypothesis that the ‘positive’ photoresponses of the seedling can be explained by a differential gene activation through P,30. ‘Positive’ photoresponses are those which are characterized by an initiation or an increase of biosynthetic or growth processes (e.g. biosynthesis of anthocyanin; growth of cotyledons). The lag‐phase of this type of photoresponse is rather long, ‘Negative’ photoresponses are those which are characterized by an inhibition of growth processes or other physiological processes like translocation. Here the lag‐phase is short. Inhibition of hypocotyl lengthening is a typical response of this sort. Réumé—Pour les plantes vertes nous présentons une hypothèse alternative en ce qui concerne l'action de rayons de longueur d'onde donnée sur la morphogénèse. Sur la base de données analytiques le chloroplaste peut être considéré comme similaire à la mitochondrie, avec la réserve importante que des composés photoactifs participent aux oxydations chimiques terminales dans le chloroplaste. Dans les plantes vertes deux cytochromes sont connus: un du typec, le cytochromef, et un autre de typeb6le cytochromeb6. On a proposé que le cytochromeb6est réduit et que l'eau est oxydée simultanément. L'électron libéré est transféré sur le cytochromefqui, ensuite, est oxydé tandis que le NADP est réduit. De plus, la lumière rouge foncé paraît convertir le cytochromeb6dans la forme oxydée. Celle‐ci peut passer à nouveau dans la forme reduite après élairement sous rayons de longueur d'onde plus courte. Le cytochromeb6pourrait donc occuper une position de commutateur entre les systèmes oxydés et réduits dans la cellule. Déterminant pour la position de ce commutateur sont d'une part la longueur d'onde de la lumière et d'autre part la cwantité totale d'énérgie.Le fait aue le cvtochromeb6est maintenu uar la lumière rouge‐foncé dans la forme oxvdée. empêherait la réduction de NADP. Ainsi ia voie métaboliGe normale serait modifiée ce qui trouverait son expression dans un changement de l'aspect morphologique de la plante.L'analogie est très remarquable entre le spectre d'action de la forme oxydée du cytochromeb6et celui de la formeP660du phytochrome qui se forme également suite à un éclairement rouge‐foncé et qui est considerée comme physiologiquement inactive
