摘要:
AbstractThis project, funded by the Scottish Education Department, was conducted at the School of Speech Therapy, Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh. The project aimed to explore the possibility of developing an observation schedule to be used firstly by therapists supervising speech therapy students and secondly by speech therapy students themselves in watching video‐replay of their clinical wor

摘要:
SummarySpeech disorders are prominent and early signs of Dialysis Encephalopathy. A speech screening assessment was devised by two Speech Therapists to detect various abnormalities of speech and mental function, and 60 patients on chronic haemodialysis for between 2–11 years were entered into the study. A retrospective and prospective study of the aluminium content of the dialysis water supply was undertaken. Abnormalities of speech and mentation were found in 22 patients, 14 of these were considered to be severe, but in only five of these was this appreciated prior to formal assessment. Improvement has been demonstrated in seven since the installation of a deioniser to remove aluminium from the water supply. The distinctive speech abnormalities were found only in those patients receiving water with a high aluminium content. The implications of the results of this study are discussed in detail in this pape

摘要:
SummaryThis is a report on language intervention within a special education class for two developmentally delayed, five‐year‐old children suspected of mild mental retardation and from ethnic groups where English was not the parental mother tongue. Two language programmes were developed from syntactic and semantic theoretical bases. Results of these programmes demonstrate that children can be taught new language skills by teachers. However such programmes should be designed to meet the particular communication needs of each child and not assume that trained skills will generalize automatically into social communication in the child's natural sett

摘要:
AbstractAs the result of increased attention to the needs of the mentally handicapped, speech therapists are being asked to undertake more speech and language training in Adult Training Centres. Limitations on the numbers of speech therapists available indicate that much speech teaching will be carried out by the ATC instructors. An attempt was made to devise an audio‐visual speech teaching scheme for use by instructors. The scheme is described and its success in teaching new speech sounds to a group of trainees discussed. As it proved possible to effect speech change under structured eliciting conditions, the scheme is judged to be a success. As the trainees did not readily generalize their new speech patterns to novel contexts, implications for therapy are discusse

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigated the effects of temporal expansion of verbal language upon the auditory comprehension performance of aphasic adults. Twenty‐three aphasics and 23 normal subjects received unaltered and temporally expanded presentations of the Revised Token Test (RTT). The RTT was administered to each subject under four temporal conditions: the unexpanded rate of 150 words per minute and temporally expanded by factors of 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75. Normal subjects responded to test stimuli under all conditions of temporal expansion with greater accuracy of performance and less latency of response than did aphasic subjects. While certain aphasic subjects presented statistically significant improvement in their accuracy of performance on test stimuli, actual score differences between expansion conditions were only minimally different. Neither aphasic nor normal subjects demonstrated significant differences in their respective latency of response between the four experimental conditions. Aphasic subjects who demonstrated improved performance did not present characteristics distinguishing them from subjects not experiencing such improved performance. It was concluded that the temporal expansion of both speech signal and pause time resulted in a moderate, but not consequential, improvement in most subjects' auditory comprehension. Further research investigating the effects of temporally expanding speech signals, without similar expansion of pause time, is indicate

摘要:
AbstractIn this study, the relationship of echoic memory, speech sound discrimination and speed of auditory processing to the consistency of correct production of certain speech sounds was examined. Thirty‐seven children representing third grade normal and /s/, /r/ and /θ/ defective speakers served as subjects. Each subject listened to tapes of pairs of vowel‐consonant‐consonant‐vowel bisyllables under each of three conditions: (1) .25 seconds between bisyllables; (2) 2.0 seconds between bisyllables; and (3) 10.0 seconds between the bisyllables in each pair. The subjects' task was to determine whether the bisyllables in each pair were the same or different. Results of statistical analyses on the proportion of correct responses indicated that production errors on different sounds may be associated with different auditory skills. The findings are related to previous investigations of speech sound discrimination skills in articulatory defective children. Clinical implications also are d
