ABSTRACTThe study of pragmatic disorders has assumed increasing importance during the last ten years, as evidenced by the marked increase in research studies and publications in this area. However, although these studies have contributed to a better understanding of disabilities in the use of language, the current literature is characterised by a lack of theoretical rigour. This can be seen in two major aspects: 1) in the widespread terminological confusion reflecting a lack of a consistent descriptive framework for the analysis of naturally occurring talk, and 2) in the lack of an explanatory theory of the relationship between pragmatic disability and language development in general. As a result, many current studies are poorly designed and unable to address basic issues in this research area. The present paper reviews these questions critically and recommends the use of detailed case studies of children with pragmatic disorders as a necessary preliminary to future progress in this area.

ABSTRACTAlong with recent developments in discourse and conversation analysis has come the recognition that some children are impaired in their ability to engage in conversational interaction. In some cases this disability has not been strongly associated with language deficits at other levels of linguistic analysis. This case study of a ten year old child presents a detailed analysis of disordered conversational data as a basis for assessment and remediation, using data from spontaneous conversation as well as from more structured communication tasks. Although the child is deficient in both interactional and transactional aspects of conversation, his major problem is seen to lie in the integration of these components. Furthermore, as the detailed analysis and interpretation of the data reveals, he adopts a variety of communicative strategies to compensate for these deficiencies. Some general implications are drawn for further research in this area.

ABSTRACTThe word finding skills of dysnomic children (learning‐disabled children with word finding problems) were compared with those of learning disabled and normal children without word finding problems when naming letters, numbers, and colours. Comparison of word finding skills between groups and conditions were made with respect to completion time, errors, and secondary characteristics. Learning‐disabled children with word finding problems manifested significantly more errors, longer completion times, and more secondary characteristics on letter and colour naming while performing similarly to children without word finding problems on number naming tasks. Learning disabled children without word finding problems did not differ significantly from normal children in their naming of colours, letters, or numbers. ABSTRACTThe distinction between phonetics and phonology as traditionally defined within linguistics is not suitable for direct application to speech pathology. It is argued that its adaptation for the purpose of distinguishing phonetic disorders and phonological disorders has led to anomalies, and, in particular, that loss of phonological contrasts does not necessarily imply that a disorder is (partly) phonological in nature. What is described as a “speaker oriented” description of the distinction is offered, together with a proposal for a three way distinction—into phonological, phonetic and articulatory disorders—to replace the present binary one. ABSTRACTPrevious studies have shown high correlation between imitation tests and other tests of expressive language. The present study compares one child's performance and relates this to his general linguistic ability. LARSP was found to reflect his ability quite well but CELI grossly underestimated it. We hypothesised that the morphological bias of CELI was responsible, and further investigation confirmed this. Yet the pattern and range of syntactic structures found in the spontaneous sample was confirmed and extended by CELI. ABSTRACTOral stereognosis testing in the form of an oral form recognition test was carried out on six adolescents who were undergoing routine orthodontic treatment with upper removable appliances. The oral form recognition test was carried out with and without the orthodontic appliance on three visits. There was no significant difference in the number of shapes correctly guessed with and without the orthodontic appliance.
