SummaryIn an earlier paper (Cantwell et al 1977) details of assessment procedures for analysing language level and language function in young autistic children were presented. The present paper describes the use of these measures to assess changes in the language of autistic children following the implementation of language programmes at home. Experimental children were found to make rapid improvements in their use of language following a relatively brief period of home intervention. These gains were then maintained even when professional intervention was reduced. Control children showed far fewer significant changes than experimental children. The greatest improvements, however, were in children's use of language to communicate, rather than in basic language level and the implications of this finding are important for our understanding of the nature of the fundamental handicap in autism. The value of using parents as therapists for their own children is also discussed.

AbstractResearch in the field of communication disorders requires that substantial population groups be used in order to study the inter‐ and intra‐ relationships of factors pertaining to specific disorders. The conceptualization, design and development of schedules for a computer‐based information retrieval programme is described. This programme creates a data bank which can be used by research workers. The programme consists of a detailed case history and basic functions schedule for recording data from cases having any form of communication disorder, and separate schedules on the symptomatology for each disorder. Schedules for articulatory/phonological disorders, stuttering and child language are described. The use of the computerized schedules in a university training speech and hearing clinic results in significantly improved student clinical appraisals and can be valuable teaching tools in formal classes. SummaryThis study analyzes profiles of syntactic usage among six‐year old language disordered children. By means of the LARSP categories, the syntactic structures of 30 language disordered and 15 normal children were grouped by a Q‐Factor analysis into clusters of mathematically similar profiles. Two groups with imbalanced syntactic development, in contrast to the normal pattern of balanced development were discerned. These appear to be similar to patterns found by Crystal. The first group (A) reveals normal clause development but inadequate phrase and word structures. The second group (B) exhibits a pattern of depressed word and phrase structure but even lower ability in the area of clause structure, with the added features of inconsistent performance and a wide gap between maximum and typical performance. AbstractThe purposes of this study were: (a) to examine the relationships between intraoral measurements of palatal length, width, and height and the degree of improvement in articulating /r/‐phonemes by a group of children after articulation training, and (b) to ascertain whether a group of /r/‐phoneme defective children and a matched group of normal articulation children differed significantly on palatal measurements of length, width, and height. Intraoral palatal measurements of length, width, and height were made on all subjects using a specially modified orthodontic caliper.Children with higher palatal measurements made significantly less improvement on /r/ after articulation training than did the children with lower palates. There was no significant relationship between improvement in articulation after training and palatal width and length dimensions. The group of /r/ defective children and the group of normal articulation children differed significantly on palatal height but not length and width. The results suggest that if a child develops an /r/‐phoneme disorder and has a high palatal arch, the child may have much more difficulty in correcting an /r/ mis articulation than would a child with a lower palatal h

AbstractThis study examined the communication functions expressed by a moderately retarded adult in a group home setting. Communication functions were examined in three conversational speaking situations: subject talking to counselors; subject talking to residents; and subject talking to self. The communication functions of interest were information‐giving, information‐giving to self, command, criticism, praise, describe, imitation, and repetition. Results indicate that the subject used all of the nine communication functions examined and demonstrated variability of function use within the speaking situations.
