AbstractThe parent‐child interactional approach is a three‐phase program for the treatment of childhood language disabilities. The first phase of the program attempts to identify those child and adult behaviors in need of change. Once all target behaviors are specified, Phase II provides individually planned parent‐centered therapy, whereby the parent is taught specific techniques to facilitate the child's language development through their everyday verbal interchanges. SummaryThe PICA multidimensional scoring system has previously been criticised for being treated as an equal interval scale without there being any evidence to justify the assumption. Two experiments were conducted to investigate whether speech therapists, experienced in using the PICA, considered the intervals between scores to be equal. Therapists were required to judge the relative magnitude of the intervals between scores, as defined by Porch. Two groups of speech therapists rated the intervals between PICA overall scores as unequal and there was considerable agreement between the groups in the rank order of the interval sizes. Three sub‐tests of the PICA were also considered and these showed agreement with each other and with the overall PICA in the rank order of interval sizes. This indicates that the PICA scoring scale is not equal interval, implying that changes across different parts of the scale are not directly comparable when assessing changes between groups of patients or within a patient. Changes across the same intervals within all subtests examined do, however, have a consistent interpretation. This suggests that it may be worth applying a weighting system to counteract the unequal intervals between score

AbstractA total of 134 aphasic cases were examined on average five months after the trauma (mainly CVA). Most of the cases were administered the Schuell test of aphasia, some were given the Coloured Matrices test (CM), and some the Standard Matrices test (SM). In addition, 53 of these cases were retested on average nine months after the trauma, to look for recovery phenomena. It was found that total score on the Schuell test did improve dramatically (error scores reducing by 37%) but that there was no change in either CM or SM (in fact there was a slight decline of about 10%). It was further found that non‐verbal intelligence as measured by CM correlated in a negative direction with severity of aphasia and positively with recovery from aphasia (once certain key variables were partialled out statistically, such as initial level of severity). In contrast, SM failed to correlate with either severity or recovery, a finding that could be attributable to the small number of cases tested on SM. Various explanations of the data were considered but no definite conclusions drawn – although the suggestion was made that a more intelligent right‐hemisphere could in some way better protect the person from the effects of a left lesion and could better promote rec
