SummaryThis study analyzes the auditory and cognitive processing profiles of children with disorders of syntax. Six‐year‐olds who were identified, using the LARSP, as having two different patterns of imbalanced syntactic development, were given a battery of tests to assess receptive and expressive processes related to grammatical development. These groups were found to differ significantly in terms of their profiles on tests of discrimination, comprehension, memory, sequencing and rule application of linguistic information. The study concludes that syntax disorders in children are not isolated problems; rather they exist within a matrix of cognitive processing skills which vary along with the type of syntactic profile. SummaryThe verbal expression of five adult aphasic subjects was compared in unstructured (spontaneous speech) and structured interactions (a picture description task) at specified intervals over the period of one year. Transcribed tape recordings were analysed to describe the subjects' syntactic system in each language sample. The possible influence of the therapists' speech contribution upon both interactions was assessed.A measurable and longitudinal difference was found between the subjects' performance in the two interactions. Subjects produced the largest proportion of discrete grammatically analysable utterances in the picture description task. A further comparison of the language samples was then made. The data was examined, for example, at the levels of the clause and phrase structures used. This indicated that the subjects tended to produce a similar range and form of grammatical structures in either task. Some practical suggestions arising from these points are discussed.The presence of the picture stimulus, rather than any alteration in the therapists' language, seems to be the most important factor in determining subjects' performance in the structured interaction. However in the unstructured situation, evidence was found of the speech therapist modifying her input in order to try to compensate for subjects' transient difficulties in formulating adult sentences. This is described with examples, together with suggestions for application to therapeutic work.

SummaryThis study investigates the nature of the phonological simplifications seen in the speech of preschool children, by analysing the effect of stress position, phonetic environment and relative recency of sound acquisition, on accuracy of production of the initial consonant cluster within a word. Forty, 4‐year‐old children, took part in an imitation task consisting of 44 three syllable nonsense words, half of which began with an early developing cluster and half with a late developing cluster. Both halves contained word pairs with first and second syllable stress. Half the subjects repeated words with a similar phonetic environment and half, with a dissimilar one.The results showed that in the main, the errors that occurred could be classified according to developmental phonological processes seen in younger children. SummaryThe analysis and interpretation of pictorial information is often used as a means for assessing intelligence and personality in normal and clinical populations. In the present study, adults with focal brain damage were required to interpret a picture of a complex scene. The purpose of the investigation was to examine the degree to which these patients are able to use information in an abstract and symbolic manner. All patients were impaired on the task, particularly dysphasic patients with posterior left hemisphere lesions. These patients also differed from patients with anterior left and right hemisphere lesions in favouring a piecemeal rather than a global processing strategy to describe the picture. The findings were related to the verbal characteristics of the patients and discussed in the context of an information processing model of perception.

SummaryThe age of attaining the milestones of walking and talking is reported for the children being followed by the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Child Development Study. In order to examine the predictive significance of early developmental delays, the prevalence of low IQs and/or reading difficulties at age seven in those who experienced early delays was examined in comparison with those whose early development was not delayed. Only slow walking and slow walking and talking were predictive of low IQ or reading difficulties. Because more than half of the children who walked after 18 months were later found to have low IQs or reading difficulties, early developmental examination of such children was recommended.

SummaryThis study reports a controlled trial of home based speech therapy for children with delayed language development living in an inner city area. Details of the six month therapy are given. Good parental cooperation was achieved. Both the experimental and control groups made significant gains over the six month period and in only one measure had the experimental group done better than the control group. The factors are discussed that would mitigate against these children attending clinics regularly. The study emphasizes the difficulties inherent in assessing therapy and stresses the need for adequate controls in carrying out such work.
