SummarySixty‐two dysphasic patients were tested on the Matrices, the Schuell and a measure of communication ability. The non‐verbal intelligence of these subjects as tested by Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices was at about the average level despite their language impairment. Intelligence correlated more strongly the more complex the tasks on each section of the Schuell. The measure of communication ability correlated strongly with the more lengthy Schuell assessment. SummaryAbnormal activity of the orbicularis oculi muscles concomitant with stammering was abolished at the same time as the speech disfluency by larynx‐triggered auditory feedback masking. Similar abnormal muscular activity observed in two “ex‐stammerers” exhibiting fluent speech at the time of testing was also abolished by the AFM device.All of the eight stammerers tested using a hand control switch to the AFM device showed delays in operating the switch which reduced the effectiveness of auditory masking in suppressing

SummaryThe language of severely deaf children is frequently very deviant in terms of the normal language used by their hearing contemporaries. Some researchers have asserted that the deaf have poor or no linguistic competence, or that they find difficulty in using what they do have to understand and produce sentences. In this paper a purely linguistic method of investigation is described that enables us to examine and describe in detail the structure of the syntactic knowledge of deaf children. The child described in this paper is shown to possess a complex set of syntactic rules, both basic and transformational, which are used to produce totally novel utterances. This deaf child does have linguistic competence of no mean order. However the linguistic rules that she uses appear to have little relationship to those used by the surrounding normally hearing speech community.

SummaryToken Test performances by 32 learning disabled and 20 achieving adolescents were investigated and compared. Results indicated that the development of language processing abilities continues into adolescence, but that learning disabled, subjects to not attain maturity at the same age as achieving subjects. A sub‐group of learning disabled adolescents was characterized by language processing deficits involving reduced memory for critical elements and. difficulty in performing the logical operations necessary to process linguistic concepts, suggesting reduced simultaneous analysis and synthesis. The findings indicate that the Token Test may be a useful tool, when used in its complete form, for the diagnosis of subtle receptive language disorders in learning disabled adolescent

SummaryIn this paper some theories which see language disorder as having a central role in the genesis of the autistic syndrome are described, and evidence relating to these theories is discussed. It is concluded:1that it is unlikely that the language disorder in autism is either a severe form of receptive‐executive developmental dysphasia, or dysphasia combined with visual impairments causing failure to develop visual language systems;2that the language disorder is not a disorder of inner language in the sense of being an impairment of symbolizing processes, nor in the sense of being a global impairment of the acquisition of concepts and conceptual thinking;3that there is no reason to suppose that any one criterial feature of autism (such as language impairment) is primary in the sense of causing other criterial features of autistic behaviour to occur; moreover, defects of communication and inner language are almost certainly cognitive in origin and may only be part of a wide ranging cognitive impairment.
