SummaryA programme of therapy for stammerers is outlined in which speech therapy and hypnotherapy are combined.Two categories of patients are defined. Group I consists of stammerers whose presenting symptoms are mild and where the aetiological basis might appear to be a simple extension of normal non fluency. Group II stammerers comprise the larger group consisting of patients exhibiting all the stigmata of the classical stammering syndrome.Group I patients are treated by hypnotherapy alone.Treatment in the latter group involves extensive speech therapy and hypnotherapy. The speech therapy programme is designed to produce muscle control and coordination for all sounds of speech. Hypnosis is used to consolidate therapy at all stages and to promote fluency in all situations.This combined therapy in which both disciplines are complementary provides a unified approach to the understanding and treatment of the stammerer.

SummaryThis paper reports a method of analysing speech and language in young children which encompasses both level of development and also abnormalities in usage. It was developed initially for the purpose of (1) measuring changes in the language usage of autistic children as a result of a treatment programme (Howlinet al,1973a Hemsleyetal, 1977); (2) comparing the language characteristics of autistic and developmental “dysphasic” children Bartaket al,1975; Rutter, 1976; Cantwellet al,1977); and (3) comparing the language of young normal children with that of both these language disordered groups. SummaryEarly childhood autism is a syndrome which appears during the first 30 months of life and is typified by a severe disturbance in language development, among other behavioural abnormalities. Since no systematic linguistic investigation of autistic children is available, an investigation of the phonological characteristics often autistic children was carried out, in the areas of both production and perception of speech sounds. In order to investigate the possibility of atypical phonological characteristics in this group, they were compared with normal and mentally retarded children matched on a nonlinguistic test of mental age.The results suggest that the autistic group shows a delayed pattern of acquisition of phonological characteristics similar to that found in the mentally retarded group.

SummaryThis study presents an analytical framework for investigating the relationship between language and action in a dyadic communication task. Retarded listeners were found to improve their performance on the introduction of speaker feedback; when feedback was removed the listeners' performance returned to its previous level. A study was carried out of the relationship between the speaker's message, the listener's choice of stimulus item and the listener's spontaneous verbalizations. This relationship differed for individual subjects and also changed as their performance improved on the task. This result was interpreted as showing that the subjects learned to eliminate different non‐functional communication strategies as they improved on the task.
