摘要:
AbstractThisarticle is a description of the preliminary stages of a study of articulatory behaviour. An attempt is made to show how improvement in physical and physiological techniques in both research and treatment requires a similar level of development in the application of psychological principles. No attempt has been made at this stage to relate performance to linguistic criteria above the phonological level. Such a step is obviously as important as either psychological or physiological analyses.

摘要:
AbstractTwo experiments are reported in which children's phoneme perception was assessed and studied in relation to their production of phonemes. In the first experiment, 23 kindergartenSs attempted to identify the correct and incorrect forms of phonemes they articulated correctly or incorrectly. In the second experiment, 56 kindergartenSs were asked to identify, as in Experiment I, but also they attempted to discriminate between the same sounds in minimally different pairs. Analysis revealed a mild relationship between children's production and perception of specific phonemic contexts and showed the identification task to be slightly more sensitive in detecting children's misperceptions of phonemes they misarticulated.

摘要:
AbstractThethreshold of auditory pain has been measured in 44 children referred for stuttering and in 44 control children matched for age and taken from schools in the same geographical area. Pure tone sound was applied via headphones over frequencies from 60 Hz to 300 Hz, across a power range from zero to 250 milli watts. The data consisted of threshold figures at 9 frequencies for 35 boys and 9 girls both in the experimental group and the control group.Statistical analysis showed that pain threshold in stutterers is lower than for non‐stutters in the groups as a whole, and then when each group is sub‐divided for sex, the females have a lower threshold than do the males. When the results are dichotomised in this way, there is still no overlap between stutterers' and non‐stutterers' threshold. All the threshold curves have a negative slope with frequency, the thresholds being lowest at 300 Hz.These data are a new finding, which requires confirmation; they lend weight to those theories of stuttering which state that stuttering has a pathophysiological basis. The possible site of such an abnormality is disc
