摘要:
ABSTRACTA set of tests was developed to examine areas of language previously described as involving right hemisphere processing. These tests were constructed to be simple to administer and clinically useful. The tests included metaphorical comprehension, the understanding of inferred meaning and humour. A discourse analysis was also performed to investigate whether any language deficits were evident in more functional communication. Testing for aphasia was carried out using the Western Aphasia Battery. Groups of subjects with left or right cerebral hemisphere damage and a group of normal subjects were assessed. The results showed that the right hemisphere damaged subjects were impaired as compared to the control subjects on all of the language tests. However, they were not significantly different on the aphasia test. These results indicate that subtle language problems can occur after right hemisphere damage and these are apparent in functional communication (as assessed by discourse analysis). It is suggested that these language problems particularly concern inability to utilise linguistic information in context. It is further suggested that these language difficulties may account for some of the apparent social and emotional problems following right hemisphere damage.

摘要:
ABSTRACTFollow‐up studies 5 years after the end of an intervention programme for children with severe language delay are reported. In the original intervention study the children showed considerable improvement in their language development, were better able to cope with schooling at a critical time in their lives, and more were able to enter normal school. The follow‐up studies show that the children's improved status in general was maintained, thus providing evidence of the value of the early remedial treatm

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper examines the contrast between professional and family understanding of impaired communication as well as relatives' claims to comprehend minimal or unintelligible language. The performance of a young head injury victim on the expression section of the Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test (FAST) was video‐recorded and played back to a group of rehabilitation specialists and researchers and to the patient's parents. Neither the professionals nor the parents were shown the stimulus card, although one of the professionals had prior knowledge of it. Whereas none of the professionals was able to understand any of the patient's utterances the parents were able to comprehend most of what she said with just one playback of the video‐recording. The formal assessment by the patient's speech therapist and her ratings of the patient on a series of Likert scales were compared with the assessment and ratings by the patient's parents. While there was agreement concerning the patient's abilities at word finding, understanding of others and reading, there was disagreement about the patient's expressive abilities, prosody and writing abilities. It was concluded that relatives' claims to understand minimal or unintelligible language were not without foundation and that their contrasting views about the patient's abilities should not be dismissed. The implications of this for the rehabilitation of impaired communication and for sociolinguistic models of language acquisition are briefly discus

摘要:
ABSTRACTPrevious studies of the non‐fluencies noted in Down's syndrome individuals have failed to take account of the linguistic age and competence of the subjects. The hypothesis of this study was that, if the language age of Down's syndrome subjects were delayed in comparison to chronological age, more insight might be gained if their non‐fluencies were considered as normal non‐fluency, a phenomenon observed in normally developing children at an early language age. The non‐fluencies of five Down's syndrome subjects were examined in relation to those of five developmentally normal subjects with equivalent language ages. The non‐fluencies in the Down's group shared some characteristics with those of the normal children, but were different in other ways. It was felt to be more appropriate to consider their non‐fluencies in relation to their language deficit and to the non‐fluencies noted in language‐impaired children. The findings thus add weight to the hypothesis of deviant language development in

摘要:
ABSTRACTApplication of the scientific method to research in speech pathology may be less than adequate to meet the needs of the discipline. Speech pathology has failed to develop the core concepts or paradigms which inform the ‘hard’ sciences, perhaps as a consequence of the unsuitability of experimental research approaches. Qualitative approaches to research allow for a more flexible and comprehensive method of investigation in clinical or research work and are employed by many other disciplines such as sociology and anthropology where the concern of the researcher is to investigate a complex, dynamic social setting or situation. An alteration to research orientation in speech pathology may provide clinicians and researchers with more appropriate and beneficial methodol

摘要:
ABSTRACTEastwood advocates the use of ‘qualitative research’ as a methodology which may help speech pathology find a research paradigm. This paper supports the utility of qualitative methods in general, outlines some of the safeguards required to rebut the charge that such methods may be subjective and therefore unscientific, indicates some of the kinds of uses to which qualitative research may be put, and suggests further reading for those interested in using qualitative meth
