The need for new improved structural resins which meet the requirements of advanced aircraft, space, and deep submergence vehicles has served as the impetus for research in this area. During the last 10 years, a significant amount of effort has concentrated on new thermally stable organic and heterocyclic polymers. The polyquinoxalines (PQ) have evolved from this effort and represent one of the most promising heterocyclic polymer systems currently known for potential use in structural application which demand high thermal, oxidative, and hydrolytic stability. The following discussion will be confined to the linear nonladder-type PQ.

Until recently, there was a considerable body of opinion that polymers could not be systematically indexed. This opinion grew out of the feeling that polymers were inherently ill-defined compositions of matter that could probably only be described in terms of the process by which they were made.

An important reference for this review is a book edited by Cantow,Polymer Fractionation, published in 1967. In this book various methods of polymer fractionation are discussed in depth. Some chapters contain references as late as 1966. Our attention is therefore focused on more recent developments. Cantow's book is a good source for earlier work.
