摘要:
In a recent review of acoustic studies (essentially absorption of longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves) of polymer solutions, Peth-rick [l] dealt mainly with polymers in organic solvents. For such systems the methods based on ultrasonic absorption are very useful for providing kinetic information on “processes involving segmental motion of the backbone, side groups and overall cooperative motion of the whole molecule”. The scope of the present paper is to review the ultrasonic studies of polyelectrolytes and biopoly-electrolytes in aqueous solutions. In addition to ultrasonic absorption, studies related to ultrasonic vibration potential and to ultrasonic velocity of polyelectrolyte solutions are also reviewed. A great wealth of information, both thermodynamic and kinetic, has been gained by such studies of polyelectrolyte solutions. It is hoped that this review will help stimulate further research in this field.

摘要:
Only 5 or 6 years ago electron spectroscopy for chemical applications (ESCA) was a comparatively unknown technique being explored only by workers with the courage and technical expertise necessary to build their own spectrometers [1, 2]. However, the published work of these pioneers in the field indicated the enormous potential of the technique and within a space of 3 years or so at least ten instrument manufacturers were advertising their wares. The availability of instruments was rapidly capitalized on by the scientific community, and a review of the field for the period 1968 to 1971 [3] included 166 references. Since that data, publications relating to ESCA have continued to proliferate and the technique has proved valuable across a wide range of investigations.

摘要:
Rubber is an interesting material possessing some remarkable properties, the most important of which is its high elastic extensibility. Ordinary solids, such as metals, nonmetallic crystals, and glasses, can be deformed or strained elastically only to a small extent, corresponding to an extension of the order of 1%. If an attempt is made to apply a greater extension, they either break, as in the case of glass, or deform plastically, like lead.
