By definition, a functional group is a moiety attached to a molecule that performs a function in terms of the reactivity and/or the physical properties of the molecule bearing it. Monomers that contain such functional groups are known as functional monomers. Thus CH2=CHX is a functional monomer where X is the functional group.

摘要:
In recent years there has been a rapid development in the area of temperature-resistant thermosets. Polyimides in particular are gaining wide acceptance by the industry because they combine a number of unique features, including excellent physical property retention at elevated temperatures and in wet environments, almost constant electrical properties over a wide range of temperatures, and nonflammability properties. Their commercial success is based on the fact that the raw materials, such as aromatic diamines and tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, are relatively cheap and the chemical synthesis is, in most instances, straightforward. Polyimides still carry the image of being difficult to process. Considerable effort continues to be devoted to improving the processability without sacrificing thermal stability. The major application for thermosetting polyimides is as matrices in advanced composites.

摘要:
Carbon fiber is a unique space-age material with very high strength and stiffness. As an engineering material it is fast replacing metal components because of its excellent properties such as low density, very high specific strength and stiffness, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and outstanding fatigue characteristics. Carbon fibers are therefore finding increasing use in a variety of applications, viz., automobile manufacturing, aircraft and space, nuclear technology, chemical engineering, biomedical, sports, super conductors, and as electrodes for high-energy-density fuel [1–6].

摘要:
From the early days of plastics, biaxial orientation has been studied as a means of changing properties [la]. Draw in two directions, rather than just one, has been widely studied with different thermoplastics (polyethylene [1–24], polypropylene [25–451, poly(ethy1ene terephthalate) [12, 46–71], and many others [72–861. The mechanical properties of tensile modulus, strength, and impact particularly of semicrystalline thermoplastics are increased by orientation. For the former, the measurement and use properties are generally in tension, and for the last, impact in the transverse direction. Optical clarity is also commonly enhanced by planar draw processes, and permeation through thickness can be changed dramatically.
