Interest in the use of plasma devices as amplifiers and oscillators at microwave frequencies has been stimulated by the increased knowledge of plasma physics gained from thermonuclear research. Although of small value to the microwave engineer at present, these techniques may provide the means of attaining higher operating frequencies than those available from existing reflex klystrons and backward-wave oscillators. The author is at Cambridge University and is a Fellow of Corpus Christi College.

Based on the ideas of Rayleigh and Thomson, incoherent-scatter radar was conceived primarily to measure electron-density profiles. However, completely unexpected results revealed the much greater potentialities of the technique.

In the Dragon reactor, the fuel-element-handling machine is built into the primarycoolant circuit. The mechanism must be protected by clutches set to slip at given torques, and the operational requirements have led to the choice of the hysteresistype clutch. Fallside andM. R. Patel, and paper 4273 S entitled ‘Application of the second method of Lyapunov to the stability of certain position control systems containing a back-e.m.f. nonlinearity’ by F. Fallside and J. O. C. Ezeilo. The papers will be read before a meeting of the Science and General Division on the 9th December 1963 at Savoy Place. Dr. Fallside and Mr. Patel are in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, and Dr. Ezeilo is in the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan.
