This paper deals with tests done on a simply supported isotropic rhombic plate subjected to certain conditions of lateral loading. The loading conditions used were (i) uniformly distributed load covering the whole plate, (ii) patch load at the centre of the plate, (Hi) uniformly distributed load over a quarter of the plate. Bending moments were obtained at certain important locations on the plate, using electrical resistance strain gauges. The central deflections were also recorded. The results obtained were compared with the available theoretical results. The correlation for the case of uniformly distributed load covering the whole plate was found to be good.

As an aid in the design of vessels or containers in a process undergoing dynamic loading, the dynamic characteristics of a cylindrical scale model vessel have been investigated by the method of resonance testing. The scale model is 1/10th scale of a vessel in a process, comprising a cylinder and torispherical head of steel.The dynamic characteristics of the scale model vessel and the normalised principal bending stresses are calculated and tabulated for a number of circumferential modes of vibration, for an empty vessel.Practical problems associated with the method of vibration testing are discussed and a practical example shown of the use of the method of dynamic similarity and the scale model results, as an aid in the design of a full scale vessel.

Strain gauge residual stress measuring techniques require a smooth site surface for optimum bond performance. Mechanical metal removal techniques are generally used for surface preparation, although these may induce operator dependent residual stress which distorts the original stress distribution. The problem becomes more significant if subsurface conditions are to be evaluated by removing material, especially when hard, tough or strongly work‐hardening alloys are being investigated. To avoid the errors caused by surface preparation, the operator independent metal removal alternatives adopted have been electrolytic polishing and chemical etching. However, these methods have slow removal rates and can be hazardous to health, factors which limit their general use for residual stress measurement survey
