The effect of residual birefringence on isoclinic angle and fringe order is considered for mechanically and optically anisotropic materials. Toupin's4theory of deformable dielectrics forms the basis of the investigation. Equations are derived for fringe order, stress fringe value and isoclinic angle in linear orthotopic photoelastic materials. The principal effect of residual birefringence relates to the determination of the isoclinic angle. This is particularly so for certain fibre–orientations. An account is given of an experimental investigation to find a steel suitable for bearing pressures from 70 to 100 tonf/in2(1 081 to 1544 MN/m2) in order to use it for the anchorages of an energised (prestressed) beam. The ring gauge performs the same function as a strain gauge rosette by providing three independent signals from which may be deduced the three unknowns in a biaxial strain system, viz. the magnitudes of the principal strains and the directions of the principal axes relative to a datum direction. It is analogous to a delta rosette but possesses advantages over the usual method of cementing three gauges to the surface of the material.
