摘要:
A prototype overland flow land treatment system was studied to determine its effectiveness in reducing the levels of volatile trace organics in municipal wastewater. Chlorinated primary wastewater, water collected from the surface at various points downslope and runoff were analyzed by GC/MS using a purge and trap sampler.

摘要:
Conductivity measurements in the air have been carried out, together with recordings of Condensation nuclei and Radon‐222 concentrations, in the city of Brest, on air of various origins, polluted by human activity and more or less enriched in Radon‐222 by the nearby granitic soils. In all cases, Radon‐222 concentration has little influence on conductivity. For air of marine origin, there appears a net inverse relation between the conductivity values and condensation nuclei concentrations.

The use of chloranine as a disinfecting process for drinking water is widely practiced in the United States. Although exposure of humans to chloramines in drinking water via renal dialysis produces marked changes in blood parameters including hemolysis, no studies on effects of orally administered chloramines have been published. This study examined the effects of a 30 day exposure of monochloramine in drinking water in doses ranging from 2.5 to 200 ppm on the blood characteristics of male A/J mice. With the exception of hematocrit which rose slightly, none of the blood characteristics indicative of oxidant stress and prehemolytic condtions were significantly affected at any dose. The conclusion is that monochloramine ingestion by A/J mice does not appear to produce evidence of hemolysis even at very high dose levels.

Cultures ofGomphosphaeria aponinawere subjected to continuous cell centrifugation and the cell‐free medium was re‐used. The growth constants for the organism, Ke, the maximum cell number, the yield of cytolytic agent (at ten days) all increased using recycled medium. Growth constants based upon chlorophylla(in vivo) content did not increase. Iron concentrations at the outset of both culture series (fresh and recycled medium) were the same, but the recycled medium interfered in the analysis of iron using a colorimetric procedure and a Technicon AutoAnalyzer II. Negative values of iron concentration were obtained, and dissolved iron had to be added to obtain base‐line values. It was possible to quantitate the iron‐complexing capacity of the solution, though the materials responsible for the interference are unknown.

The polluted Fox River in suburban Kane County, Illinois, was investigated as a source forSalmonelladispersal to near shore habitats. ASalmonellaisolation protocol, which included pre‐enrichment of environmental samples in buffered peptone water, vas more effective than direct enrichment in tetrathionate.
