A preliminary study on the feeding ofHeteropneustesfossilis in Diyala river revealed that in Autumn, Pisces were the major food items in the large lenght ranges, whereas Chironomidae. and Oilgochaeta were the dominant groups in younger fish. However, during spring the major food items were chironomids. Occurance and frquency of occrance of the major food items are given. Lenght‐weight relationship during two seasons are also given.

This paper reports the results obtained in an activated sludge pilot plant: 10 mg/l of Cu (2+) or 10 mg/l of Cr (3+) were added to the wastewater feed at the same time that different amounts of sepiolita were introduced into the aeration tank of the biological unit.

Six pesticides were examined for oxidan stressor effects on Dorset sheep erythrocytes, an animal model with low glucose‐6‐ phosphate dehydrogenase (G‐6‐PD) activity. The pesticides tested were aldicarb, carbaryl, dluron, glyphosate, malathion and metolachlor. A liver microsomal enzyme system was used to generate metabolites of the parent compounds. The blood parameters examined for oxidant stressor effects were reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and methemoglobin (MetHb) formation. Acetylchol inesterase (ACHE) activity was measured after aldlcarb, carbaryl and metolachlor exposure.

Solubility of crude oil of 28 API° were determined experimentally at 25, 35 and 45°C. Solution for unsteady‐state diffusion equation using Fourier series was used to calculate the diffusion coefficients. It was found that the diffusion coefficient increases with temperature. The activation energy was calculated to be 8.5 KCal which confirms that the dissolution of oil is diffusion control. Diffusion coefficients were further correlated with temperature according to the equation:

Aponin (anacronym forapparentOceanicnaturally occurring cytolyin) has been isolated from the green algaNannochloris sp. following a previously described procedure, chloroform extraction of the cell‐free media. The crude material is cytolytically active toward the red tide organismPtychodiscus brevis, an unarmored dinoflagellate responsible for red tides in west Florida coastal waters. The crude aponin was purified by means of reverse‐phase (C18) liquid column chromatography, and was tested by an improved bioassay. Under these conditions, a single‐step purification increases the specific activity (units/mg) to 2.5 × 105. The results are significant because some calculations of amount of aponin to treat a red tide have appeared that were based upon earlier work using crude aponin. Such calculations, obviously, give an incorrect, inaccurate, and biased view of the potential for management of a red tide.

A two‐phase anaerobic process consisting of an acid and a methane phase in series was studied for the conversion of whey to methane. The acid phase was studied at retention times of 8, 16 and 24 h at pH 4 and 5. Retention time of the methane phase was 72 h and the pH was not adjusted during the study. Samples from gas collection systems were analyzed for methane and carbon dioxide composition. Samples from effluent lines of the acid and methane phases were analyzed for suspended solids, volatile solids, volatile acids and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations.
