摘要:
A real‐time, field‐portable derivative UV‐absorption spectrometer (DUVAS) has been designed, built, and tested as a wastewater monitor. Although emphasis is placed on its use at coal conversion facilities, the monitor has applicability in a variety of industries. The instrument is microcomputer‐controlled, providing a variety of operating modes. Laboratory and field measurements have been conducted using the prototype instrument. Among the Environmental Protection Agency's priority pollutants of environmental concern contained in the water streams produced and/or utilized at various coal conversion and other industrial plants are phenols, cresols, and xylenols. This instrument is useful as a real‐time, field‐portable monitor for phenolics at ppm concentrations.

Cellular resistances to the toxic effects of two environmentally and industrially important platinum (Pt) complexes (K2PtCl6and Pt(SO4)2) were induced separately in Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO‐S) by continuous exposure to the compounds for 5 and 4 months, respectively. The two resulting cell lines, 220R(resistant to 220 μM K2PtCl6) and 550R(resistant to 550 μM Pt(SO4)2) have resistant phenotypes which are stable for at least 55 population doublings in the absence of a selective agent (i.e., Pt). Each resistance is quite specific with respect to the Pt atom as well as the attached ligands, but both cell lines show some cross resistance to other Pt complexes and to one other Noble metal complex (K3RhCl6). X‐Ray fluorescence determinations of Pt in parental CHO‐S and 220Rcells cultured in the presence and absence of K2PtCl6demonstrated that very little of this compound is taken up by either cell line. However, comparable analyses revealed that the amount of Pt accumulated by 550 cells grown in Pt(SO4)2is 3–4 times the amount taken up by the parental CHO‐S cells. Cell fusions between each resistant cell line and the Pt‐sensitive CHO‐S line yielded hybrids which, in each case, display Pt resistances that are intermediate between those of the resistant and sensitive cells employed in the hybridizations. The resistant phenotypes are therefore codominantly regulated.

摘要:
This research examined the biodegradability of a recalcitrant or inhibitory waste stream with the use of an electrotytic respirometer. Specifically, it addressed the oxygen uptake rates associated with biological treatment of pentachlorophenol waste‐water from a wood preserving operation. Results indicated that the respirometer can be successfully used to develop an acclimatization program for biological treatment of inhabitory waste streams. Based on a gradual introduction of the PCP wastewater, overall COD reductions of 71.4 percent were realized in a bench scale activated sludge treatment system.

In sampling gaseous hydrochloric acid in combustion source emissions by the standard method (collection of particles in a probe plug followed by absorption of gaseous HCl in an impinger solution), there is a potential for error due to interaction of HCl with the filtering medium and/or with particles on the filter. A laboratory study was conducted to examine the interaction of gaseous HCl with glass and quartz media and with particles from coal‐fired and incinerator boilers. Also, some source sampling results obtained by different methods at cement production plants, oil‐fired boilers, and a coal‐fired boiler were examined. On the basis of both studies, it is recommended that sampling for gaseous HCl in combustion source emissions employ a quartz filter medium, high‐velocity sample flow, minimum filter temperature, and minimum sample volume. This approach is expected to yield the most accurate HCl mass emission rates for source categories having significant chlorine in fuels or processes.

摘要:
Potential interferences in the anhydrous isopropanol (a‐IPA) extraction method for separating sulfuric acid from particulate sulfate on filters were investigated. The method involves separation and recovery of the acid with a‐IPA, followed by aqueous extraction of the particulate sulfate. Analysis for sulfate in the two separate fractions was performed by ion chromatography. The solubility of ammonium sulfate in a‐IPA was measured and the effects of temperature and moisture content of the solvent on ammonium sulfate solubility were determined.

The vibrations produced by chewing and moving actions of first‐and second‐instar Caribbean fruit fly,Anastrepha suspensa(Loew), larvae in infested grapefruit, guava and loquat were detected with an accelerometer. The circadian rhythms showed continuous larval activity. The larval vibrations produced a nonperiodic signal that ranged from 80 to 800 Hz.

摘要:
Many natural waters contain sufficient quantities of trace organic contaminants to prohibit algal growth in bioassays. Triton X‐100 is capable of moderating the toxic effects and revitalizing growth of algal cells in natural water medium. By compensating for the growth activating effect of Triton and by equating the growth inhibitions to equivalent Cu stresses, the toxicity of natural water can be determined and its impact on productivity can be evaluated.
