摘要:
Colloidal suspensions such as Hydrous Zirconium Oxide vas prepared in the laboratory. This solution was then deposited on a porous support for sometime to form dynamically formed membranes. This membrane was tested for treatment of effluents such as Sodium, Lithium and Magnesium Chlorides. Various salt rejection were obtained according to their molecular weight.

Cultures of the Japanese red tide organismChattonella subsalsawere treated with aponin, the material that is extracted from cultures ofGomphosphaeria aponina. Aponin is cytolytic toward the Florida red tide organism,Ptychodiscus brevis, but it was less cytolytic towardC. subsalsa, based upon analysis of cells surviving after a 24‐hour period. The implications of this preliminary study are considered.

摘要:
4‐Hydroxybiphenyl and 2‐hydroxybiphenyl are major and minor metabolites, respectively, in mammals and a number of fungi. Both compounds were tested against cultures of the red tide organismPtychodiscus brevis(formerlyGymnodinium breve). The LD50value for 4‐hydroxybiphenyl is slightly lower than 2‐hydroxybiphenyl. The value for either is between 1–2 ppm under the conditions of the assay, i.e. extent of lysis within a 20‐hour period. Both substances appear to exhibit a saturation effect above 2 ppm.

Results of electrophysiological studies of the visual and spectral sensitivity of the compound eye ofSpodoptera exigua(Hubner) andS. frugiperda(J. E. Smith) indicated peak visual sensitivities in the green and ultraviolet regions. Field trapping studies with 15‐W lamps of different colors indicated thatS. exiguaandS. frugiperdaresponded in greatest numbers to ultraviolet radiation.

In order to study the effect of hydrocarbon pollution on the particles size distributions of a marine aerosol in the atmosphere, impactor and Nuclepore filters were used. Comparisons between marine aerosol and hydrocarbon polluted aerosol are carried out, showing important modifications.

摘要:
A kraft wastewater cleaning method, consisting in acid coagulation and carbon adsorption is studied on a chemical basis. The results obtained show that acid coagulation mainly produces a precipitation as well as a partial acidolysis of lignin compounds; a certain retention of cellulosic compounds was also noticed. Subsequent carbon adsorption substantialy removes carbohydrates and practically all of the remaining ligni‐nic compounds.

Ninety‐six hour static bioassays were conducted with one‐to‐six‐day‐old fathead minnow fry to determine the acute toxicity of leachates generated from Lurgi gasification ashes, an H‐Coal liquefaction residue and an SRC‐I liquefaction residue. LC‐50 values, their 95% confidence intervals and the amount of dilution necessary to eliminate mortality during the 96‐hour bioassays were determined. Leachates that were generated from the solid wastes at four pH levels and under anaerobic and aerobic conditions were analyzed for approximately 40 chemical constitutents. Nineteen of the constitutents were found to exceed recommended water quality criteria levels in some of the samples at pH values between 2.3 and 11.3. All eight leachates, including the unadjusted pH leachate, generated from the Lurgi ash of an Illinois No. 6 coal contained concentrations of Ca, F, Li, Mn, Pb, SO4and Sb which exceeded recommended water quality levels. Leachates produced from the gasification ashes were not acutely toxic at the unadjusted pH levels; however, unadjusted pH leachates from the liquefaction residues were acutely toxic. All leachates with a pH less than 6.2 were acutely toxic and required at least a 1:10 dilution and as much as a 1:2000 dilution to eliminate mortality. Mortality was probably caused by the combined effects of pH and total ionic strength of the leachates.
