摘要:
An accidental spill of phenol contaminated an aquifer in southeastern Wisconsin in July, 1974. The phenol has persisted for 19 months, causing disruption in the use of numerous potable well water supplies. Low levels of phenol in the potable water were reported to have had short‐term adverse (non‐fatal) effects in humans. The rate of dilution and degradation of phenol in this aquifer has been very slow.

摘要:
Soil samples were collected within a sixty mile radius of a zinc smelter complex located on the northwest boundary of Amarillo, Texas. Cadmium was extracted from the soil samples with nitric acid and cadmium concentrations detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Cadmium concentrations of approximately fifty‐fold over ambient (background) were detected within the Amarillo city limits. Wind velocity vector profiles were found to directly correlate with soil sample data and established the zinc smelter as the primary source of cadmium contamination in this area.

摘要:
Over the past several years there has been an increasing use of the pattern recognition techniques to aid in the interpretation of large data sets. The techniques employed have generally been forms of cluster analysis. Factor analysis is a branch of multivariate analysis that has had little previous application in aiding the understanding of data sets describing natural systems. The combination of these two techniques provides a powerful tool in manipulating the data into an intelligible form. The basic principles of these statistical methods are given and their application to a set of physical and chemical analyses data of the sediments of a small lake ecosystem, Chautauqua Lake, New York, are presented.

A method is described for inducing motile forms of the Florida red tide organism,Gymnodinium breve, to convert to the sessile form. Available data indicates that the process is reversible. Key phases of red tide cycles must be the encystment‐excystment processes, and the formation of sessile forms represent a significant step in the understanding of the encystment process. The effect of light intensities and stray radiation from the cathodes of cool white lamps is compared and considered. Stray radiation from the cathodes of the fluorescent lamps appears to cause cell damage, as indicated by the first order rate constant kefor loss of motility. Deviations from the dependence of keon light intensity can be explained in terms of the distance from the point‐source radiation represented by the cathodes, and an inverse‐square law dependence is demonstrated.

A competitive technique employing the SO2(3B1) photosensitized isomerization of cis‐C2F2H2to trans‐C2F2H2in the presence of various aromatics has been used at 3660Å and 22°C to determine the rate constants of the quenching reaction SO2(3B1) + Mk4?removal. Using PSO2= 25.1 Torr and Pcis‐C2F2H2= 0.230 Torr the results from Stern‐Volmer plots gave k4estimates (units oflmole‐1sec‐1× 1011) of 0.883 ± 0.085, 1.43 ± 0.13, 2.04 ± 0.19, 2.17 ± 0.26, 2.29 ± 0.20, and 2.15 ± 0.19 for M = benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, o‐xylene, m‐xylene, and p‐xylene, respectively. These results indicate that increasing the e‐density in the aromatic nucleus due to e‐releasing alkyl substituents results in an increase in the magnitude of k4. However, the o, m, and p‐xylene results indicate that the value of k4is not sensitive to the position of the alkyl substituent on the aromatic ring.

摘要:
Carbon chloroform extract and related blank materials obtained by the Organics‐Carbon Adsorbable modification of the Carbon Adsorption Method have been found to contain a significant amount of elemental sulfur ranging from 17 to 58%. Carbon preparation affected the blank value determined; chloroform elution of prewetted carbon yielded higher values than extraction of “as received”; carbon.
