摘要:
This paper presents a unique process for the conditioning and disposal of pulp and paper sludge. The sludge is slurry frozen (not solid frozen), by direct contact with the refrigerant, butane. The process, by the addition of small quantities of the coagulants such as alum prior to freezing, results in 3 to 4 times faster dewatering rates on sand‐drying beds as well as accelerated vacuum filtration rates as compared to those of the unconditioned sludge. The filter cake moisture content is only 40%. The supernatant and filtrate qualities are much better.

摘要:
Calibration graphs for lead, cadmium and copper have been obtained in natural water, in centrifuged natural water and. in distilled water. These calibration graphs were repeated in each medium one time when acidified to PH 2.2 and another time when buffered to pH 7.4. The shape of the calibration graphs obtained in the various types of media has been explained with reference to adsorption of metal ionsonthe suspended particles of the natural water and on the container surfaces. An equation describing the adsorption process has been applied on the calibration graphs obtained for lead, cadmium and copper in natural water samples. The effect of time on the shape of calibration graphs has been also looked into.

Factors affecting Cu+2uptake by the water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) were examined. Two phases of copper uptake were observed throughout the uptake range (1–1000 mg/1). An initial rapid uptake phase of 4 hours followed by a slower, near linear uptake phase extending past 48 hours was observed. Stirring the solution enhanced uptake, suggesting copper removal is partially diffusion limited. Variations in pH over the range of 3 to 10 did not significantly affect uptake. Increasing the root mass of the plant increased the amount of copper taken up. As solution volume was increased more copper was removed. The presence of complexing agents during the uptake phase reduced copper uptake. The inability of complexing agents to recover all copper initially removed by a plant suggests a migration to sites within the plant.

摘要:
This study examined performance data from an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant to evaluate variations in effluent quality used for irrigation. Frequency and moving average statistical analyses were performed on daily plant data collected during one year. It has been found that secondary‐treated effluent quality can, for at least 50% of the time, satisfy the requirements for irrigation waters concerning solids, organics and nutrients levels. Effluent quality was influenced primarily by influent (raw) waste‐water characteristics and was not highly variable except for suspended solids content. Filtration and chlorination processes are recommended in order to ensure more adequate and reliable effluent for irrigation.

Functional activity of macrophages was studied in mice upto 15 days after intraperitoneal injection of 2.5 and 5.0 mg of fly ash using in vitro parameters. Fly ash did not cause any variation in the type of cellular response. The total cell number decreased significantly by 4 days after fly ash treatment but recovered subsequently. The decrease was dose dependent. Fly ash also caused a 50% depression in the FC receptor mediated phagocytosis of IgG coated sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) by macrophages at 2 days of dust treatment. However, the recovery began earlier with 2.5 mg fly ash than with 5.0 mg fly ash. These changes were not associated with any marked changes in esterase activity of macrophages following phagocytosis of fly ash.
