The removal (exchange‐adsorption plus precipitation) of Cu, Zn, and Cd from a municipal landfill leachate by kaolinite and montmorillonite was found to be dependent upon the pH and the ionic strength of the leachate. Sorption increased with increasing pH values and with increasing concentration of heavy metals. Montmorillonite sorbed approximately five times more heavy metal from solution than kaolinite. Precipitation contributed significantly to removal of Cu, Zn, and Cd from leachate above pH 6.

A laboratory study was conducted to develop a simplified analytical method to quantitatively extract heavy metals from airborne particulate matter collected by the hi‐volume sampling technique. X‐ray diffraction was used to identify the major crystalline materials collected. The composition of the extraction mixture was varied to determine optimum concentrations of the mineral acids required. A comparative study was performed to test the efficiency of the new method with that of the well‐known Soxhlet extractor procedure. Additionally, twenty standard filter strips containing varying amounts of lead were supplied by EPA for analysis in a blind study. The values determined for the test strips were in excellent agreement with the known values. The effect of low‐temperature ashing on the determination of lead was also investigated. The simplified extraction method yields data that compares very favorably with the Soxhlet extractor procedure without the hazards of boiling acids and high cost per analysis associated with the Soxhlet method.

Lead, which has been identified as a constituent of automobile exhaust, was found associated with sediments in snow dump areas in Ottawa. Lead levels in these sediments were over an order of magnitude above those of uncontaminated sediments. Algae and aquatic plants exposed to these same lead contaminated sediments over a 2–4 month period were shown to have higher lead concentrations than those grown over control sediments.

A laboratory experiment compared the rates of nitrogen mineralization from two sludges with varying characteristics. The sludges were mixed with soil at rates of 150, 300 and 600 ppm organic‐N and the mixtures incubated for 13 weeks. The sludge produced by aerobic digestion (Richmond) had mineralization rates of from 36.1 to 60.8% of the organic‐N while the sludge produced by anaerobic digestion, lime addition, and de‐watering (Burlington) had mineralization rates of from 13.7 to 25.2%. The amount of N mineralized from sludge treatments as well as the soil check treatment were well correlated with an autoclaving test for N availability.

CAMP data on air pollutants for 1966 through 1974 and data from selected cities over the same period were analyzed and used in an air quality index based on the root‐mean‐square of the normalized pollutant values. Trends in urban air quality over this period were evaluated and the primary pollutants in each city identified.
