摘要:
Described within is an effort whereby an industrial waste was evaluated with respect to it's environmental impact when disposed of in a municipal sanitary landfill. Discussed are all aspects of the waste disposal from initial sampling and analysis, regulating approval, leaching and toxicity tests, as well as actual excavation and disposal.

摘要:
Leachates from land disposal of solid waste varies in chemical composition widely from one location to another. Certain chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste (MSW) leachate, for example, influence the rate of movement of heavy metals through soils more than others. The most prominent fall into broad categories such as pH (as it reflects organic acids), concentration of the soluble common salts (EC or IONS), total soluble organic carbon compounds (TOC) and certain naturally occurring metals notably iron (Fe). The solubility of the components of MSW leachate changes markedly as a result of pH fluctuations, aeration, dilution by water, drying and wetting, freezing and thawing, and stage of biodegradation.

摘要:
A repeated inspection survey was performed of the concentrations of Cl, NH4‐N, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu and Mn in the surface water of the Isumi river, the longest river in Chiba prefecture, Japan. The sampling points were the places where the river water is introduced into the ricefields. The survey was continued from June, 1973 to Dec. 1977. It was found that the concentrations of Cl, NH4‐N, Na, K, Mg and Ca were unusually high through the year but particularly in winter mainly owing to the waste water of two Iodine Factories situated up river.

摘要:
A novel method of sample preparation has been developed in order to obtain interference‐free Atomic Absorption measurements for lead at 283 nm. This technique has been applied to fourteen urban soil samples and thirty‐five plastic food wrappings to remove organic contaminants and additives which also absorb at this wavelength.

摘要:
The sorption of americium on 34 common rock forming and accessory minerals of igneous rocks has been measured from an artificial groundwater at ambient temperature. Preliminary results are given. For most of the minerals the distribution coefficient increased sharply with pH in the narrow pH range of 3–5, and then tended to level off and decrease at pH above 8–9. For minerals containing anions such as F‐, CO32‐, and PO43‐, indications of chemisorption were observed. Only for the clays and at low pH can the sorption predominantly be attributed to ion exchange, described by ideal ion exchange equations as indicated from measurements in 4 M NaCl solution.

摘要:
In some people exposed to the long‐lasting activity of compounds contained in the “ chimney trail “ of power station the increasel level of MetHb was found but no increased values of SHb were observed Human organism responds to low concentrations of nitrogen oxides contained in the atmosphere by reaction to increased level of MetHb as well as the increase of GSH concentration in erythro‐cytes found near the upper limits of norm, and the increase of activity of G‐6‐PD and first of all the activity of MetHb‐Red. In the examined cases the Hb moleculary structure was of A type≪ The mechanism of human organism's response to the low concentrations of nitrogen oxides in inhaled air may be examined in two aspects, namely as the subtoxic effect with the increase of MetHb and as hormetic activity, stimulating the increase of reduction system activity.

Weather modification nucleating agents may accumulate in anaerobic environments such as aquatic muds and anaerobic sewage treatment facilities. Silver iodide burn complex and silver phosphate effects on methanogenesis were investigated to assess the possible ecological impacts of these agents. Enriched cultures of methanogenic organisms did not significantly alter methanogenesis when seeding generator burn complexes of silver iodide‐ammonium iodide, silver iodide‐titanium dioxide, and silver iodide‐sodium iodide were present at 37 and 74,122 and 236 and 90 and 180 ng/ml respectively. Significant stimulation of methanogenesis, CO2incorporation into biomass, and the bacterial population, did occur when 32–64 ng/ml silver from dissolved silver phosphate was present in the culture medium. These data indicate that silver, if it were to accumulate in aquatic or sewage treatment plant environments at the above concentrations, would not be expected to cause detectable changes in methanogenesis. In contrast to the suggestions of earlier studies, it does not appear that anaerobic organisms have a greater susceptibility to weather modification agents than do aerobic organisms.
