摘要:
A lead metal aerosol test atmosphere was produced by condensation of lead vapor. Lead metal was heated in a stainless steel tube in a dynamic nitrogen atmosphere to temperatures ranging from 720 to 990 °C. Average particle diameters produced using this generator ranged from 10 to 120 nm with concentrations from 4.5 μg Pb/L of nitrogen to 631 μg Pb/L of nitrogen, respectively. The generated particles were approximately uniform in size distribution and were nearly spherical. The temperature range which gave reproducible concentrations did not coincide with the temperature range which could give uniformity in average particle diameter at through‐the‐oven flow rates of 2000 mL/min.

摘要:
Two commercially available ultrasonic devices (UD) were evaluated for their efficacy in repelling cockroaches and preventing the attack and biting of two species of mosquitoes. The frequency outputs were also determined. The UD's were ineffective in eliminating or repelling the insects and one of the devices gave off sound radiation which could be potentially harmful.

Naturally‐occurring wood chemicals were studied in order to nominate chemicals to the National Cancer Institute's Chemical Selection Working Group as candidates for carcinogenesis bioassay. After application of several qualifying criteria relating to previous, current, or planned carcinogenicity tests and to verification of the identity and occurrences in wood, the preliminary candidate list of approximately 300 compounds was reduced to a final candidate list of 248 chemicals. Based on consideration of possible carcinogenic activity and evidence indicating potential exposure, the following 11 chemicals were nominated: abietic acid, cardol and urushiol (as a pair representing alkenyl/alkanyl cate‐chols), coniferyl aldehyde, ellagic acid, kaempferol, lapachol, 4‐methoxydalbergione, podophyllotoxin, pterostilbene, and α‐terpineol. Although they are naturally‐occurring, two of these chemicals, abietic acid and α‐terpineol, were nominated primarily on the basis of their commercial significance.

A hazardous waste landfill leachate data base covering some thirty leachates from eleven disposal sites has been developed. The sites cover a range of sizes, liner designs, waste types and leachate collection systems and the leachate data cover a range of organic and inorganic constituents. For the cases included, the inorganic constituents appearing in highest concentrations in the leachate are iron, calcium, magnesium, cadmium, and arsenic, and the organic constituents appearing in highest concentrations are acetic acid, méthylène chloride, butyric acid, 1,1‐dichloroethane, and trichlorofluoromethane. The constituent concentrations in the leachate from hazardous waste landfills fall within the reported ranges for municipal landfill leachate. Based on preliminary data, only gross correlations could be made between leachate quality and waste input.

During mass production of the Mediterranean fruit fly,Ceratitis capitata(Wiedemann), for the 1980–82 California Sterile‐Insect Technique (SIT) program, the production of volatiles by excessive fermentation in the diet caused eye and lung irritation to workers and heavy corrosion to air conditioners. Subsequent laboratory analysis of the air identified acetic acid and CO2, as the primary causal agents. Concentrations of these volatiles in the air were reduced from ca. 16.5 ppm to 10 ppm when the initial diet pH was lowered from 5.8 to 4.5. However, the adjustment was coincident with noticeable irregularities in pupal recoveries and larval developmental time. The biological effects of three initial larval‐diet pH's (3.6, 4.6, and 5.6) on mass‐producedC. capitatawere investigated. Decreasing the pH resulted in three undesirable consequences: decreased pupal recovery, decreased pupal weight, and increased larval developmental time. Substitution of citric acid for hydrochloric acid in the diet did not affectC. capitataquality.

Simulated precipitation samples containing 16 metal ions were prepared at 4 pH values. Absorptive characteristics of polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyester/polyolefin sacks were evaluated at pH 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0. Simulated precipitation was in contact with the sacks for 17 days, and subsamples were removed for chemical analysis at 3, 7, 10, 14, and 17 days after initial contact. All three types of plastic sacks absorbed Fe throughout the entire pH range. Polypropylene and polyethylene absorbed Pb throughout the entire pH range; polyester/polyolefin sacks absorbed Pb at pH 4.0 or greater. All plastic sacks also absorbed Cu, Mo, and V at pH 4.5 and 5.0. Leaching the plastic sacks with 0.7 percent HNO3did not result in 100 percent recovery of Cu, Fe, Pb, and V. These sacks would be suitable collection vessels for Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Sr and Zn in precipitation through the pH range of 3.5 to 5.0.
