摘要:
The performance of sewage treatment plant in Kuwait was studied as an example of several similar plants in operation in the Gulf area. Analysis of the performance studies has shown that it was possible to produce a water quality of 71.4 COD and minor trace heavy metals. This water can be reused for irrigation purposes.

A computer model of ground‐water flow (PLASM) and solute transport (TRANS) was used to simulate dewatering, injection of excess water, and recovery after abandonment from modified in‐situ retorting of oil shale at Federal Lease Tract C‐b. Transient calibration of the flow model was achieved by closely matching observed fluctuations of water levels in observation wells during a large‐scale, multi‐aquifer, multi‐well, multi‐rate injection test against computer‐generated head arrays. Chemical particles were moved by convection and, using random walk methods, by dispersion. The model indicates that, under proposed conditions of retort development, 1) water level recovery at the site will be rapid and result in hydraulic gradients higher than natural, and 2) ground water velocities and transport of solutes down gradient will be more rapid than predicted in previous studies.

Reverse osmosis has effectively been utilized to remove cadmium from a metal processing waste stream. Experimentation with a thin‐film composite membrane reduced cadmium concentrations from 165 to 0.003 mg/L under optional processing conditions. Concentrations of other metals and overall conductivity were rejected in excess of 98%. Rejection efficiency and production rate were increased by an increase in system operating pressure. Cadmium was effectively concentrated in a batch concentration study while generating high quality water for process reuse. Membrane fouling is a problem if proper in‐line prefiltration is not utilized. Reverse osmosis appears to be an effective alternative to other more traditional treatment methodologies.

Chromosome breakage analysis with Mitomycin C (MMC) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) were obtained on 10 computer operators with computer exposure for a minimum of 3 hours per day for 4 years and 10 control subjects matched for age and personal lifestyle. No difference was found between the two groups in the total number of chromatid and chromosome aberrations in cells grown at 48 and/or 96 hours in Mitomycin C (20 or 50 ng/ml‐final concentration). The average number of SCE per cell in approximately 30 cells from each person was 6.4±1.1 (mean ± standard deviation) for the computer operators and 9.2 ± 1.6 for the controls. This difference was significant (p <.001). The replicative index was significantly higher (p<.01) in computer operators than in control subjects. The number of SCE appeared not to be influenced by the years of computer exposure. Additional studies with larger sample sizes will be needed to identify if significant differences exist in cell kinetics and sister chromatid exchanges in individuals employed as computer operators.

Studies examining sorption equilibria of benzene and toluene to New Jersey coastal plain aquifer solids were performed. Adsorption to the Cohansey aquifer solids, a coarse to fine grade sand with a 2.6 percent organic carbon content, and to the Potomac‐Raritan‐Magothy aquifer solids, a sandy loam with a 1.3 percent organic carbon content, was found to be dependent on adsorber mass. Equilibrium adsorption could be characterized by either linear or Freundlich isotherms. Toluene exhibited a greater affinity to sorb than benzene. Greater adsorption was in general observed for both substances to the Cohansey material, which was attributed to its greater organic matter (carbon) content. Consecutive desorption experiments displayed an apparent hysteresis.
