The effects of 120 days exposure to a high‐intensity (80 kV/m) 60‐Hz electric field on serum chemical constituents was investigated using 135 field‐exposed and 135 sham‐exposed Sprague‐Dawley rats. Statistical tests performed included Multivariate Analysis of Variance, Univariate Analysis of Variance, and tests of simple effects. None of the 17 serum chemistry assays performed showed statistically significant differences between sham and exposed animals. It was concluded that the exposure to an 80 kV/m electric field for 120 days produced no changes in body chemistry metabolism.

摘要:
The causes for the persistence of a‐hexachlorocyclohexane in the atmospheric environment were explored. The isomerization of y‐hexachl orocycl ohexane to the a‐form is accomplished in solid state by photolysis under direct sunlight in the presence of ferrous‐ferric system during summer months. The isomer concentrations in the head space were measured before and after sunlight irradiation and after bringing the samples to a temperature of 21 ± 1°C. Under identical conditions, photochemical studies carried out with α‐, ß‐, γ‐ and δ‐hexachl orocycl ohexane isomers have unequivocally established that the a‐isomer is the most stable conformer photochemicaliy although the p‐isomer is known to be the prevalent metabolic product in mammalian species. Transformation of the HCH isomers to the stable α‐form may be one of the factors responsible for the presence of higher levels of the a‐isomer than the y‐form in the rain waters previously observed.

摘要:
The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in sediments from lakes around a coal‐powered electric generating plant in southwest Houston, Texas, have been determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The plant had been operational for only about one year at the time of sample collection; therefore, variations of trace metals with depth are considered to be essentially unaffected by the plant. The current concentrations of these trace metals which have been established constitute baseline data for determining future anthropogenic additions. Evidence is also presented to show that Fe and Mn have influenced the distribution of the trace metals studied in these lakes.

The distribution of intratracheally administered fly ash into extrapulmonary organs of rats at various periods has been studied by giving89Sr‐enriched fly ash of respirable particles size. The organs studied were liver, brain, heart, spleen, kidney, stomach, small intestine and plasma. The89Sr‐radioactivity appeared in all these tissues and was maximum at 12 hrs period. The translocation 89 of89Sr‐radioactivity from lung occured in two phases one a rapid one and the other a slow one. Similar pattern of decline in89Sr‐radioactivity was obtained in extrapulmonary organs and plasma. A gradual but steady increase of89Sr‐enriched fly ash radioactivity was found in the trichloro acetic acid (TCA) precipitable fraction.

摘要:
The disinfection policy of the National Water Carrier (NWC) of Israel has recently been changed from chlorine to chlorine dioxide. One of the objectives was therefore to determine precisely all the inorganic products of such disinfection. It was found that none of the known analytical methods could satisfactorily solve this problem, determining all the inorganic species which were formed. The determination of all the oxidants became possible, however, when a few analytical methods or their combinations were applied simultaneously. The validity of the methods described in this study was further confirmed by the good balance that was obtained between the ClO2applied and the total oxidants determined after various time intervals.

摘要:
A simple digestion method of sewage, sludge, and other materials in sealed ampuls for multi‐element determination is reported. The sealed samples are digested in an autoclave at 125°C and 1.2 atmosphere pressure for one hour. In a single digestion both volatile and non‐volatile elements are recovered. Comparison of this method with conventional hot plate digestion using NBS reference materials, sewage, and sludge, shows equal or better recoveries of the metals in sealed ampuls. The method is not prone to metal contamination and can be used for large numbers of samples.

The potential of the water in the Mississippi River in south Louisiana to result in drinking water that exceeds the EPA standards for some heavy metals was studied, using analyses of the river water obtained regularly by the Louisiana Division of Water Pollution Control. Between 1978 and 1983, river water concentrations at individual sampling sites exceeded the drinking water standards 1 to 3 percent of the time for cadmium, chromium and copper; 7 to 9 percent of the time for arsenic and lead; and 18 percent of the time for mercury. Correlations of heavy metals versus total suspended solids (TSS) suggest that arsenic, cadmium and chromium are carried predominantly by the TSS and should be removed in the usual water treatment steps of coagulation followed by settling and/or filtration. Copper and lead appear to be carried, at least partly, in dissolved form, while additional data are needed in the case of mercury.
