摘要:
The untreated sour water from a coal‐gasification process has been examined for toxic and teratogenic effects on the embryos of the amphibianXenopus laevis.Embryos were exposed to varying concentrations of sour water, and the number of deaths and abnormals as well as motility, pigmentation, and stage of development were monitored. Increases in toxicity and teratogenicity were directly related to both concentration and time of exposure. The sour water also caused a reduction in motility, pigmentation, and rate of embryonic development.

摘要:
An explicit formula for the Kolmogorov‐Smirnov statistic, when distribution parameters are obtained from the data, does not exist in the literature. Lilliefors(5) provided a table of the Kolmogorov‐Smirnov statistic by a Monte‐Carlo simulation technique in which the sets of random samples determined the sets of parameters. This paper applies the 4‐parameter lognormal (SB) model defined by Johnson(6) to these Monte‐Carlo data and shows that the Kolmogorov‐Smirnov statistics can be described by this model which is constrained to the interval zero‐one.

摘要:
The reported investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of coal humic acid leached from coal under coal slurry pipeline conditions and related circumstances upon the growth of algae and upon potential eutrophication of waters exposed to coal humic substances. Coal humic acid was prepared by the partial oxidation of Wyoming subbituminous coal with hydrogen peroxide in a basic medium. At lower levels the product was found to stimulate the growth ofChlorella vulgarisalgae. Optimum growth was obtained at 75 mg/liter of coal humic acid for algae acclimated to coal humic acid and 55 mg/liter for non‐acclimated algae.

The unarmoured dinoflagellate,Gymnodinium breve(orPtychodiscus brevis) was used to test the effectiveness of the photodynamic action of hematoporphyrin. Four systems were compared: light control and dark control (organisms in light and dark, respectively, for 24 hours)versusdark and light test (organisms plus 8 x 10‐5Mporphyrin in dark and light, respectively, for 24 hours). Essentially total destruction was observed for the last system (light test) and no statistically significant differences were observed among the other three systems. The effect of concentration of porphyrin was tested in preliminary experiments using the (10‐4.1, 10‐5.1, 10‐6.1, 10‐7.lM) and the lowest concentration had no discernable effect.

摘要:
This study, which was done to ascertain the relationship between soiling index and suspended particulate concentrations, shows only fair correlations, indicating that the relation could be used for planning purposes but not for regulations or compliance monitoring. Along with the background information relating to the general topic of the paper, some applications of obscuration versus aerosol concentrations are described and a criticism of the use of single‐valued opacity regulations is offered.

As a result of the 1975 Moodus Conference, a task force was established to analyze the ozone data from the 19 Moodus states and to assess the importance of ozone transport across the Midwestern and Northeastern United States. Data from daily ozone maps, aerial ozone measurements, and trajectory analysis are used in this paper to describe the typical summertime ozone episode in the Moodus study area. The results indicate that ozone concentrations in a high pressure system as it moves out of Canada into the Midwest are typically 30–50 ppb. Higher concentrations first develop over the areas of high anthropogenic percursor emissions. As the high pressure moves eastward, the areas of high ozone increase in size and concentration and eventually merge together. Verticle ozone profiles conducted on consecutive days and nights suggest an ozone half‐life of 46.8 h above the nocturnal inversion layer. Using the corresponding dark phase rate of ozone decay in conjunction with air parcel trajectories, it was estimated that, under certain conditions, over 100 ppb of ozone are transported from the Midwest to the Northeastern Atlantic Coast.
