Recent studies have called into question data from some environmental studies. Quality Assurance Programs offer a means of evaluating the reliability, precision, and accuracy of data and form a basis for documentation that project specifications of contract and scope of work are met. This paper describes the elements that make up a Quality Assurance Program for a biological environmental study.

摘要:
Cesium content is routinely measured in tissue samples at the University of Manitoba Cyclotron Laboratory using the PIXE (Proton Induced X‐Ray Emission) technique. It has been possible to estimate the accumulation of Cs in the tissue of mice treated for several days with daily intraperitoneal injections of CsCl. The estimation of Cs concentration employs the internal standard method. We have obtained a detection limit of 2 PPM in 30 min. bombardment time using a 5 nA proton beam at 30 MeV.

摘要:
This study is concerned with the effects of certain pollutants on the surface tension of pulmonary surfactant (γ). Surface tension of the aqueous phase of a canine lung homogenate was measured by a ring tensiometer. Environmental pollutants (Cl2H2O2, HCl, H2SO4, NH3and SO2) were added to the lung extract in liquid form. Variations ofγwith time, temperature and pollutant concentration were observed. Effects were observed with Cl2, SO2, H2O2but not with NH3, H2SO4or HCl. No clear distinction was observed between oxidants and reductants, but some intriguing time variations were observed.

摘要:
The ciguatoxic dinoflagellate,G. toxicuswas isolated from Islamorada Key, Florida. Analysis of unialgal cultures indicated that the dinoflagellate produces two toxins: a chloroform soluble toxin and a water soluble toxin. The former toxin was judged to be closely related to ciguatoxin on the basis of TLC and clinical effects manifested in mice. The water soluble toxin was closely related to maitotoxin on the basis of TLC and clinical effects manifested.

摘要:
One area of responsibility of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to determine the effects of air pollution exposure on human health. To generate carefully controlled pollutant exposure conditions and to determine their effects on the human body, EPA has established a Controlled Environmental Laboratory (CEL) where all exposure, stress and body function parameters are carefully controlled and documented. The design and performance of the pollutant gas control system for the CEL is described. This system allows human test subjects to be exposed to constant or varying concentrations (equivalent to ambient levels) of SO2, NO, CO, NO2and O3. The pollutant gas control system uses closed loop feedback control to obtain a control error of less than ±5% or twice the lower detection limit of the analyzer, whichever is greater. Status of all critical system components is constantly monitored and stored on magnetic tape to ensure subject safety and to provide for offline data validation.

摘要:
The effectiveness factor for an encapsulated immobilized enzyme particle of spherical geometry has been investigated by considering both external and internal substrate diffusion resistances. The enzymatic reactions are considered with and without substrate inhibition. Further, the effects of membrane thickness, Sherwood Number, dimensionless inhibitor constant and the ratio of the substrate diffusion coefficients in the enzyme solution and the membrane are estimated parametrically. The numerical results are obtained for a range of variables of practical importance.

摘要:
The acute toxicity of cesium given intraperitoneally (IP) as CsCl in mice is characterized by autonomic upset and by a multiphasic excitant‐depressant action on the central nervous system. The predominantly depressant action can progress to respiratory embarassment, cyanosis, spinal convulsions and death. Light microscopy of mice treated with 2.0 mEq Cs+kg‐1IP for 14 days showed lymphoid hyperplasia in small intestine. Measurement of tissue cesium by the proton‐induced x‐ray emission (PIXE) technique is convenient and reproducible. Cesium displays a generalized bioactivity that merits further study.
