Organic components of effluents from a fluidized bed coal combustor were sampled by collecting vapor phase compounds on a Tenax polymer adsorbent trap and particulate samples with a concentric electrostatic precipitator (CESP). Samples of ash collected by the effluent cleanup devices were also analyzed. Samples were extracted to isolate the organic components. Extracts were characterized by gas chromatography to quantitate extractable hydrocarbons and by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry to obtain molecular weights and tentative identification of components. The effluent contained higher concentrations of extractable hydrocarbons in the vapor phase than associated with particles.

摘要:
The traditional flux‐gradient model for lateral diffusion in the atmosphere has the flux of pollutants related to the concentration gradient. The model investigated in this paper has the flux related to an integral of a weighted concentration difference. The classic solution for diffusion from an elevated point source was obtained from this integral diffusion model without the necessity of assuming variable coefficients. The integral diffusion model was used to confirm that the solution for an area source having finite width is accurately approximated by the solution for an area source having infinite width.

摘要:
Inorganic pyrophosphatase activity was monitored in sewage samples. The optimum pH for incubation (5h) was within pH 7.5–8.0. Magnesium did not consistently enhance the activity, indicating that the trace metal requirements of the enzyme were sometimes met by cations in the sewage. The activity was present in all samples: high values were recorded in the primary raw sludge and the lowest value was detected in the final effluent.

Sources contributing to human exposure to chloroform have been identified in the environment. A general approach has been followed to compare hemispheric background concentrations to those .in a coastal urban environment. Then the available data on exposure‐dose relationships were used to calculate effective personal dosage relative to a standard man. Where specific data were unavailable, national averages were used to conservatively estimate emission rates. Chloroform emissions due to the chlorination of public water supply or cooling waters exceeded that due to its use as a solvent. As a result, human dosage occurs, mainly due to the extensive use of chlorinated water and chloroform's volatility. Urban dwellers receive at least 1.2 times the dose predicted at background levels. Atmospheric exposure proves most important in determining one's total dose.
