摘要:
The hazards due to environmental pollution by sulfur dioxide are reviewed, the current methods and new trends suggested for pollution control of sulfur dioxide such as removal of sulfur either before or after the combustion of petroleum products or fuels, chemical reaction with water, conversion of sulfur dioxide to elemental sulfur, dry absorption of the gas, and wet scrubbing, are also presented.

摘要:
Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), a proposed detergent additive, and the related iminodiacetic acid (IDA) underwent rose bengalsensitized photooxidation. Formaldehyde, glycine, and IDA were products of NTA photooxidation: glycine and formaldehyde, of IDA photooxidation. The rates were slow. A reaction mechanism involving rearrangement of a quaternary N‐O species and subsequent concerted loss of CO2and formaldehyde is proposed.

摘要:
A procedure for determining the sulfate content in drinking water and natural water systems has been developed. Interferences were removed with an ion‐exchange column and an acid treatment before precipitating the sulfate as the 2‐perimidinylammonium sulfate. This compound was then thermally decomposed to form sulfur dioxide which was measured by the West‐Gaeke procedure. The method has a working range of 0–120 ppm with a relative standard deviation of +2.0$ and a sensitivity of 1.8 ppm. Total untreated sample requirement is less than 20 ml, out of which replicate determinations can be performed.

摘要:
Particle formation in the ozone‐propylene reaction has been studied using a microprobe system. Size frequencies show that particles are formed by a complex chemical accretion process possibly involving polymeric ozonides. For a given propylene concentration, particle production is found to increase with increasing ozone concentration. Water vapor is found to inhibit partially particle production. Structural characteristics of the chemical constituents of the particles have been studied by IR and NMR.

The potential usefulness of solar and wind energy as sources of electrical power is examined in the context of the projected needs of the province of Manitoba. It is suggested that as the capital costs of solar, wind and nuclear power plant construction are likely to become comparable within the next twenty years, a real choice exists for the consumer, because of purely regional factors.

The octanol/water partition coefficients of 12 naphthalene homologues have been measured using a newly developed fluorometric technique. The log P values of alkyl substituents obtained by this method were found to be in reasonable agreement with the literature values.

摘要:
Hydrogen sulfide gas is present in hydrothermal waters that are useful for electric power production. Previous schemes for H2S emission control increase the costs of geothermal power. A modification of the classical Claus process for producing sulfur from H2S is compatible with many geothermal plant designs. In the presence of a market for sulfur, use of the process could decrease geothermal power costs.

摘要:
A solar‐still‐greenhouse system was investigated for treatment of sewage, recovery of high quality distillate, and to utilize the nutrients contained in sewage for plant culture. Two small solar‐still‐greenhouses were constructed and operated. The temperature variation in the solar stills and greenhouses, distillate condensation rate and its quality and plant viability in both units were investigated. The results indicate that solar radiation deodorizes sewage and reduces its BOD in the still. Condensates were free of coliform organisms, contained ammonia nitrogen and BOD in small concentrations.

This paper describes the chlorination of naturally occurring organic compounds. Chlorination of tannic, humic, vanillic and gallic acids and D‐glucose resulted in the formation of chloroform, CHC13, whereas, chlorination of α‐pinene, acetic, propionic and butyric acids failed to produce any measurable chloroform.
