摘要:
The acididic functional group content was investigated of molecular weight fractions of fulvic and humic acids sampled at various locations of a watershed within the Laurentide provincial park, Quebec. In order to study the effect of humification, also humic material produced by a streptomycete culture and sampled at regular intervals during a 6 months’ incubation period was investigated.

摘要:
The effect of chlorine on the survival of E coli and Streptococcus faecalis in water samples collected from one of the water treatment plant in Baghdad city was studied. It was found that, the length of time required for a complete kill ofE coli and S faecaliswith the highest dose of chlorine used (0.8 mg/l) were 2.0 and 0.5 hrs respectively. However, our results suggest that it is necessary to apply some new treatment techniques to provide safe water for consumption.

摘要:
A laboratory and field sampling program was conducted to study the ground‐level concentrations of benzene due to fugitive emissions. The three‐day field sampling study addressed benzene sampling in the downwind plume line at ground level within the first 500 meters of a maleic anhydride plant. The laboratory evaluation of the benzene measurement technique used, along with the results of the ground‐level sampling are presented.

摘要:
The microbially mediated disappearance of 1,3‐dinitrobenzene was complete in Tennessee River water samples taken downstream from a munitions production facility but not in local (Frederick, MD) water samples. Microorganisms from the Tennessee River could be grown on 1,3‐dinitrobenzene as a sole carbon source and could mineralize the compound. At 106total microorganisms per mL and 25°C, the half‐life of 1,3‐dinitrobenzene in Tennessee River samples and enrichment cultures was estimated to be 1 and 9.7 days, respectively. Growth of Tennessee River microorganisms on 1,3‐dinitrobenzene did not result in their metabolism of several other nitroaromatic compounds found in munitions discharges.

摘要:
Chemical bioaccumulation in nonsmoking heterogeneous human population was determined by a noninvasive expired air technique. Ubiquitous and nonubiquitous environmental pollutants were isolated and identified and the respective distribution and inhalation hazards were evaluated. Attempts were made to isolate and identify the state of health related expired air constituents.

摘要:
Thirty‐nine local plants of Maryland were collected, ground, and extracted with two solvents. The extracts were incorporated into an artificial diet and tested for antifeedant activity vs. a control against fall armyworm first‐instar larvae,Spodoptera frugiperda(J. E. Smith). Several extracts resulted in larvae that weighed less than 10% of the average weight of the control larvae.

摘要:
Ascorbate was found to siqnificantly (P < 0.05) reduce the occurrence of heinz body formation in normal human and sheep red cells incubated with acetylphenylhydrazine. While in fundamental agreement with earlier findings of Winterbourn1with glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G‐6‐PD) deficient human red cells, in the present study the concentrations at which ascorbate initiated significant protection in both sheep and normal humans were considerably higher than in the Winter‐bourn1study and the magnitude of protection, while statistically significant (P < 0.05), was considerably less than reported by Winterbourn.1

Human enteric viruses are believed responsible for numerous disease outbreaks caused by contaminated groundwater, but little is known about the survival of these organisms in groundwater. This study compared the ability of several viruses and bacteria to survive in groundwater. The organisms were contained in individual survival chambers and exposed to a continuous flow of groundwater from a 275 ft deep domestic well. The survival of the test organisms ranked in order of decreasing decay rates were coliphage f2, rotavirus SA‐11,Escherichia coli, echovirus‐1, fecal streptococcus, poliovirus‐1, and coxsackievirus B3. Low numbers of bacteria and viruses survived for the 24 day duration of the experiment. These results indicate that enteric viruses are capable of surviving for extended periods in groundwater.
